Adventure Quest Reviewed

Adventure Quest is pretty unique, in that it is a turn-based game played over a web browser. While it has a wide variety of classes, quests, and items, Adventure Quest can get repetitive quickly. Combat is mainly point-and-click which is rather tiring. During each battle you will have to plan your attacks according to the enemy’s weaknesses but this style of game play doesn’t bring anything new to the genre. While the backgrounds are well drawn, they are motionless. With the lack of battle music, the only sound effects you’ll here are from attacks which makes combat a dull experience. Along with the lack battle music and background effects, some of the attack animations are also animated very poorly, which takes away from the overall enjoyment of the game.

Another drawback to Adventure Quest is that leveling slows than significantly after level 10, and in order to improve your character’s stats, you’ll need to defeat certain NPCs in the game, which are unusually difficult, unless you pay for the game, or grind for hours in order to get better gear. One of the only redeeming qualities of Adventure Quest is the fact that the game has virtually no learning curve, players can simply pick up the game for the first time and figure out how to play within minutes, even people that normally don’t play online games can master the basics of Adventure Quest through the game’s tutorial system.

Combat in Adventure Quest closely resembles that of old school console RPGs, as combat is turn based. The single biggest drawback to Adventure Quest is the lack of multiplayer elements. The game feels too much like a single player game, as interaction amongst players in minimal. The only time you actually get to interact with players is through PvP, which isn’t even exciting. All in all, Adventure Quest is entertaining for a few hours but there simply is not enough free content to warrant playing for longer than that. Too much of the game is locked behind a subscription fee. Adventure Quest is definitely worth a trying, but don’t expect to be captivated by it.
