Aeronauts is a 3D Third Person flight shooter set in Europe during the 1930s. Players fly customizable airplanes in matches consisting of 2-6 players. Win matches to earn experience and money used to purchase new planes, skills, items, and more. Aeronauts has great graphics and game play but too little content.

Aeronauts Reviewed

Aeronauts is a shooting game that takes place in the skies. Unlike most free to play games, Aeronauts actually bothers to introduce a story and create an interesting atmosphere. When players log in for the first time they are greeted to an opening movie explaining the discovery of some magic fuel that has allowed the nations of Europe in the early 20th century to build vast aerial fleets. You are chosen to study flight at an exclusive university and must then make your way there.

The intro movie ends where the tutorial begins. Through the short tutorial players are introduced to the basic game play, after trying both keyboard and mouse movement, players must pick which they prefer. Additionally, players can use a game pad to fly. The graphics in Aeronauts are well done though the player characters were made to look extremely stupid. Your character is short, pudgy, and has buck teeth for some reason. Besides the tutorial there are currently two other single player “episodes” though they are not playable until higher levels.

After every match players will be taken to their hangers where they may customize their warplanes or equip new parts and skills on their pilots or gunners. Most new planes and parts can be purchased with in game currency at the shop though some special items must be purchased with real cash. While the plane customization is not too impressive, it does add some variation to the game, hopefully more options will be added soon. The major stumbling block for Aeronauts is the utter lack of content. Besides there only being three single player ‘missions’, players must make due with two game modes: Dog Fight and Balloon Collect. Novice players only have access to three maps though there are four more available to experienced pilots. Seven maps in total is still very unimpressive.

Another major problem in Aeronauts is the small community. Players will have a hard time finding a room to join and even though the max number of players in a round is 6, matches rarely include six people. Usually AI pilots are used as filler but the computer is not a very challenging opponent and their inclusion lowers the experience gain from the match. Aeronauts is a game with some potential, but until that potential is realized in the form of more maps, characters, game modes, and missions, I cannot recommend it.
