Air Rivals Review
Air Rivals has had a very rough history. Originally titled Ace Online in Korea, it was published in North America by Gala Net back in 2005 under the name Space Cowboys. In 2007 Gala Net was forced to shut down Space Cowboys because their license was revoked. A publisher called Gameforge 4D then published the game under the title “Flysis Online” but this name ran into copyright troubles so it was renamed Air Rivals which is the current incarnation of this remarkable game.
Crunching Numbers
In Air Rivals, players control war planes called ‘Gears.’ There are four different gears to chose from, each with its own specialty. The I-Gear is an Air-to-Air fighter plane, the B-Gear is an Air-to-Ground Bomber, the M-Gear plays a supportive role by healing and buffing other Gears, and the A-Gear is the Ground-to-Air Tank. All four gears can fly and complete missions alone, but in PvP, each plays a distinct roll. There are 6 stats in Air Gears: Attack, Fuel, Agility, Defense, Spirit, and Shield. Gear types each have different stat growth. For example, the I-Gears gain 4 points of agility per point allocated. Every level players gain a stat point to distribute and certain missions reward bonus stat points. When creating a character, players are also given several avatars to choose from which effect how their character will look in person while outside his or her Gear.
Decisions, decisions
Air Rivals includes an optional tutorial which rewards players with cash and items when completed. I would advise new players to complete the tutorial, even though most of the lessons are painfully obvious - with 5 stages are dedicated to movement alone. Movement and firing are handled with the mouse while commands such as boosting, slowing, and strafing are handling with the keyboard. The combat is fast paced which makes for exciting PvP battles but unfortunately the PvE (Player vs Environment) aspect is rather dull. Players will almost always have ‘missions’ to do. Missions usually require players to kill a certain amount of one or more creatures and reward players with exp, cash, and items. These missions are obviously more exciting than just grinding with no purpose but they get tiresome fast. For the first 20+ levels players will be hunting flying bees, spiders, moths, bats, and other mundane creatures. To make matters worse, most beginner hunting grounds are nearly empty which means players will often be grinding alone. Luckily, characters level up rapidly in Air Rivals. In less than an hour players will reach level 11 and be ready to choose which of the two factions (BCU or ANI) to join.
100 VS 100
It is possible to play Air Rivals without PvPing at all but for most players, PvP is the main hook. There are several PvP options in Air Rivals. The simplest is dueling. When outside cities, players can challenge others in the same area and level range to duels. Duel victories and losses will be recorded on all players character profile so it is important to take them seriously. When inside a city, players can sign up to the arena and join or host battles with the specifications they desire. The third PvP option is large scale faction battles that can involve up to 200 people (100 on each side). These battles are the most exciting as all players level 11+ can participate and actually contribute to the battle, and there are a number of ways for players to organize themselves to make things less chaotic. Players in the same faction can form Brigades and each faction can elect a single leader which can send server wide messages to all players.
Good-quality gaming
Even with its faults, Air Rivals is one of the most unique and entertaining free to play MMORPGs i’ve has the pleasure of playing. Air Rivals has plenty of grinding and questing for those interested in traditional MMORPG dynamics, but also includes the fast paced combat found in games like GunZ or Exteel. This mix of RPG and action elements works quite well in Air Rivals but does not make up for the fact that Air Rivals is mainly a PvP centered game. If PvP happens to be what you’re looking for, start downloading Air Rivals right away. If PvP in MMORPGs does not interest you, Air Rivals probably won’t either.

WORST GAME IV PLAYED EVER!! Dont play this. It wouldnt even let me finish the tutorial.. They taunt you with a small little Music box but the problem is NO MUSIC! and then to top it all off… you could be flying around minding your own business and BOOM a message pops up and its like Iv got a mission for you.. Non of the monsters are challenging at all. Its really glitchy and wont Roll what kind of airplane combat game is it if you cant roll? then the land based movement is jerky with your gear… you cant turn just 20 degrees you have to turn a full 90 degrees or nothing at all… I played this game for an hour and hated it. all because of the glitches… MAJOR ONES!!! like loss of controls constantly..
so it seems “Space cowboy” IS REBORN :). by a different developer. awesome.
Hopefully they don’t shut down….

Ignore ADisgruntaleGamer, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. this game is GREAT. he couldn’t finish the tutorial because he’s brain doesn’t hold the capacity to learn that you need to double tap the left or right key to roll. There IS MUSIC its called buy some speaker’s u poor sack of shit. When u fly around and a message comes up its obversely because you have leveled and there’s a new quest for you to start. He only played for an hour… of course there isn’t going to be any challenging monsters… he properly only got to lv 2 because he spent all his time trying to roll. Now for the land based movement… ITS A PLANE GAME WHY WOULD U WANT TO DRIVE ON THE GROUND, besides that if you do want to fly on the ground its called A-GEAR which is a tank based gear which means you can fly and drive on the ground with out any limitations. I haven’t found any glitches in the game only stupid people who don’t know the difference between a glitch and not knowing how to play the game.
ADisgruntaleGamer, seriously whats wrong with you… If you read what to do in the tutorial then you’ll know how to roll >_> and you can turn less than 90 degrees. If you felt like it you could turn 1 degree <_< . Also about the music either get speakers or import your own music and still get speakers… Ive never ran into any glitches and I’ve been playing for a while. Oh and you never have loss of controls unless you don’t know how to move a mouse… Every thing else the guy above me said. Like why missions appear on your screen… and why the monsters aren’t hard.. Oh one more thing, The land based movement is supposed to be jerky with an airplane in this game. When you land on a spot that you are allowed to land on you click the w,a,s,d keys to change the direction you look… Its not ment to drive around. If you want to drive around then play as the A-Gear (which is a tank/airplane) They move on the ground without any jerky movements and fly close to or if not as good as any other vehicle you can select in this game. THIS IS A GREAT GAME AND I SUGGEST YOU GIVE IT A TRY
Good game. Free for open beta. One of the best Sci-Fi FPS MMO games out there, if not the best. Definitely worth a download if you like FPS flying games with PvP, items and all that jazz.

There is game music… thers music in most maps…
And thers also a music player.. where you put your own music into a music folder inside the Air Rivals Folder, then you can use the ingame player and play the music… thats what the box is for dumb asss…
Also might i add one thing.. the missions are not as tedious as the leveling.
What I like about this game is that you can also go behind enemy lines (in the PVE) and take down enemy players from the other faction. No request for a duel is required, just target and kill. But for those who don’t want to get shot down, you can still wander the same landscapes safely in the safe zones. But for those who want action, the battle zones will suit you nicely.
WOW an ingame player huh. So does this game a full download to it finally and not some dam torrent. I thought that was awsome when PW did that. I was listening to Static x and killing MOBS. Now I can listen to Static X and blow some bitches up. SWEEEETTT I was wondering what happend to this game. Has the community gotten bigger.

One of the best online games out there. It is VERY unique because of it’s gameplay. It isn’t you’re click to go/kill like other mmo’s, you are in control. You have many skills and different machines to choose from. The community is good, yes Air Rivals has a full client download and not a torrent. Warring in this game is pretty insane. I have yet to see it crash, you don’t need a “great” CPU to run the game either, so all in all, well worth the 2-3 hours to download it.
And ADisguntleGamer is gay. Don’t bother with his post. If you open up your Airrivals folder from your desktop, you can put YOUR OWN MP3 MUSIC INTO IT! It is basically an in game media player, so you can fly and kill to the music you like. Which I felt was awesome, because I don’t like ingame music for most MMO’s anyways.
sounds good, imma have to add this to my f2p mmo’s list to check out =D….ill repost here if i like it, i am a VERY skeptical player, takes a lot of research to get me to dl a game, and i will drop it fairly quickly if its lame rather than make the mistake of pouring hours upon hours into it for nothing. Great F2P game. I’ve spent about 6 years playing dozens of F2P games, and I have to say AirRivals is the best. There are a few hackers, but they don’t get to high levels because GMs are on often (they hide when they are on though). When the GMs do talk, they can be very funny. One time, one sent me to G-Ark (a VERY high lvl map, I was lvl 72 and still almost peed my imaginary pants). Since you are forced to work as a nation, the community ends up being great. I was once lent an item worth more than all my weapons armor etc, because I needed a weapon to help me level. The wars are great. They may be laggy for Mother Ship or Strategic point wars depending on your computer. Each gear fulfills a role, and if a nation is lacking in one type, they can get royally screwed over.
Igears are very important for chasing, and killing Bgears
Bgears are used for setting up camps (using Ground Bombing Mode/Air Bombing mode with hawks) and breaking camps (Big Boom)
Agears are also used for camps, and for pushing enemies back in tunnel maps
Mgears are used for camps, since they have 0 speed engines, and can buff and heal
If you decide to try it, I would suggest Auriga server, since it is the most balanced. (Join BCU)
