Anarchy Online Reviewed
Originally released in 2001 as a pay to play game, Anarchy Online can now be played free of charge. Unfortunately, only the original content and the first expansion are available to free accounts. The three most recent expansions are only available to subscribers. Anarchy Online was released back when the MMORPG market was dominated by Ever Quest. Not surprisingly, Anarchy Online looks and plays very similarly to EQ. Though technically a Science Fiction game, it feels more like a traditional fantasy MMORPG.
There are four races in Anarchy Online, dubbed “breeds.” They are: the Solitus, Opifex, Nanomage, and Atrox. The Atrox are the heavy strength, low intelligence race, the opifex are the high agility, low strength race, the Nanomage are the high intelligence race, and the Solitus are the average human race. Players can choose whether their characters are small, medium, or tall, skinny or fat, and one of several face choices. One of Anarchy Online’s best features is that there are a total of 14 different classes. Rather than name them all, it will suffice to say they include everything from pure tanks, to ranged fighters, to crafters, traders, and everything in between.
The graphics in Anarchy Online are three dimensional but feel like they are from the distant past. Characters and items alike look blocky and look ugly. Add to this the incredibly boring combat and you have a game that is barely playable by today’s standards. For those that can look past the archaic game play, there is a feature rich experience waiting. The skill system is Anarchy Online is one of a king, as players level they gain points which can be distributed among dozens of areas. Characters can become experts with certain weapon types, max out their stats, learn crafting skills and much more. There are dozens of different equipment slots which lets players customize their gear in thousands of ways.
Anarchy Online is now seven years old but the community is still very active, even the beginner zones are populated. Besides questing and instances, Anarchy Online also has a vibrant PvP scene. Players can duel each other or participate in large factional battles. The beginner specific areas have several simple quests and new players start with over 300 healing potions. But even with all that, Anarchy Online is too outdated to warrant a recommendation, especially since most of the content is still stuck behind a subscription fee.
