Archlord Reviewed

Archlord used to be a pay-to-play game, but recently Codemasters got rid of the subscription and made it free-to-play, supported by a cash shop. When playing Archlord, it becomes clear that Lineage II was the inspiration for this game as it plays similar to that game. Players have three race choices: Human, Orc, and Moon Elf. The Human and Orc races each have three classes. Humans can be either a fighter, archer, or mage. Orcs can either be a berserker, hunter, or sorcerer. The final race, the Moon Elf, has only two class choices: Ranger and Elementalist.

You can customize your character a bit by selecting several different hair styles and faces, but for a 3-D game, the customization is severely lacking. Fortunatly, once you enter the game you won’t be bogged down by a lengthy tutorial. The NPCs you start near will have quests available, some of which involve running from one NPC to another and listening to them explain their role. Once you are done with this, receive your first kill quest and head outside town.

Combat in Archlord is straight forward: you double click your target and your character will auto attack it. Once you are a higher level you can assign skills to the number keys and use them as you fight. Hunting monsters in Archlord is not the game’s main appeal; its unique PvP system is. On each server, one player can claim the title of Archlord, giving him almost God-like powers. He can control night and day, the weather, and can send sever wide messages. In order to claim and hold this position, a player must survive and prosper in the open PvP environment. While many areas are open to PvP, killing innocent players will earn you rogue points which limit your access to towns. Unfortunately, Archlord doesn’t offer compelling enough game play for me to recommend it until you can participate in the richer PvP experience.
