Atlantica Online Overview
Atlantica Online finally launched Sept. 24, 2008 following a long closed beta. It is the only free-to-play, turn-based MMORPG with 3d graphics. Most turn-based MMORPGs tend to be 2d and very simple affairs. Atlantica styles itself as a ‘Strategy MMORPG’ where players can team up and participate in large scale battles involving dozens of characters.

Atlantica Online Review
By LordAltay and Jay Orton
Currently, and even at release, Atlantica Online is one of the largest and most in-depth, free-to-play MMORPGs on the market. When I first read about Atlantica, I thought it would be a very slow game because of the turn-based combat system, boy was I mistaken. Atlantica Online is one of the most fast-paced MMORPGs I have ever played.
The Lowdown
Players are able to command multiple characters to attack at once. Combat is brisk, with short time limits on turn-length keeping everyone on their toes. Oddly, most monsters don’t attack on their turn, which moves the game along faster, but makes it incredibly easy. Experience rates are high, which means players will level up rapidly. However, with a level cap of 100 and multiple characters to train, players won’t max out their group any time soon. There are always plenty of quests to do and even though they are not very interesting, contribute to a well-rounded game.
Attack of the Clones
New players are given the option to play either the Ndoor or GamenGame versions. I highly recommend leaving it on the default Ndoor option, since it’s MUCH more popular. Next, players must select a server. Note: New players will not be able to create characters on servers labeled ‘Busy’.
Character creation is a bit different compared to most games. Instead of selecting a class, players must choose from among seven types of weapons: Sword, Spear, Axe, Gun, Bow, Cannon and Staff. Each weapon type comes with a short description, but it’s not too difficult to figure out what each one does - staff is the mage class, sword is the main tanking class, etc. The character creation screen gives you four faces to choose from, six hair styles, three hair colors and two outfits, leaving relatively few appearance customization options.
Travel the Globe!
After character creation, players are introduced to the story behind Atlantica through a short tutorial they must complete. The tutorial effectively introduces players to combat and the interface, with each feature of the game being learned/unlocked through a quest-like system.
One of the best features in Atlantica is Auto-Walk, which allows players to quickly get to their quest objectives. The whole interface is handled masterfully, and the maps are detailed and based on real-world locations. Players can explore places like Asia, the Middle East and Europe, either on their own or by following the long quest line that leads players across the globe. Since combat only occurs when players voluntarily click on monsters, players are generally free to explore the world while avoiding battles.
What really sets Atlantica apart from other fantasy MMORPGs are the turn-based battle scenes where players control multiple characters at the same time. Atlantica’s multiple character system is accomplished through for-hire mercenaries. The character that each player creates is their main, but as this character levels, they can recruit a growing number of mercenaries. It’s important to have a varied mix of characters for the end game, but there seems to be a strong bias towards melee classes early on. I found my spearman and swordsman significantly out-damaged my ranged characters starting out.
Short and Sweet
Atlantica Online has very comprehensive PvP and Guild options. Players can participate in PvP leagues to win fame and fortune, or form powerful guilds to conquer and manage cities. For those more detail-oriented, by battling the same monster repeatedly players unlock journal entries that display the monster’s stats and loot drop tables. They can also earn certain bonuses for future battles with the same monster.
All these features, combined with the turn-based game play, make Atlantica Online a truly unique experience. Even if you hate turn-based MMORPGs, give Atlantica Online a try - it’s a free, five-start MMO if we’ve ever played one.

looks tight! im going to download this
I downloaded this not expecting much as i dont usually like turn based combat and really expected the worse but was willing to give it a try it turns out this game is pretty much a blinding little game with huge quests and pretty graphics and a huge friendly community i recomnd even if your sceptical to download and give it a try trust me its worth it!
lol, the battle entry sequence (the shattering glass) is stolen from final fantsy xD
Wow… It looks very fun and it Goetian says its a friendly community i might give it a try! This may mean i have to uninstall Perfect World. Decisions decisions decisions…
im mad…i download this game and and my grapic card suks i wanna get a new comupter!!!!!
ugh…4hrs to dl this game. hope its all worth it!
ugh… i lag in this game
Great game and definitely worth anyone’s time! (Especially if your an FF fan) The fighting system is different than most MMORPG’s, it’s very enjoyable and not the same old hack and slash.
if you have a crappy comp, dont bother playing it! i learned it the hard way… curse you lag..
it does really feels like ff XD
bob you could always alter the graphic settings in Alantica to a lower standard to reduce lagging or try 1 of the not so busy servers maybe
best free to play mmorpg ever
Well this is something new to me… I can’t say I’ve ever been a turn-based freak and I’m not used to the time-limit. But I downloaded it and gave it a try. I haven’t got much into it due to some annoying lag. Lag while moving around does not bother me, but in a battle with a time-limit. *eeps* Its fast paced, has beautiful graphics even on very low settings, and from the little I’ve seen, the scenery is nice. I hope to annihilate lag so I can play this effectively. Its a great game and I agree with the review, try it. You can always uninstall later.
Instead of a turn based like this it cud hav used a similar style as Tales of Phantasia type games along with the graphics it alrdy has. (look up on youtube if u wanna noe what im talking bout)
i would hav defenitely played it if it had that
if you think the game is easy you obviously haven’t played much of the game. there’s a HUGE jump in difficulty starting at lvl 50. its not as bad before that. by lvl 70, bosses are dealing 1000 dmg a hit and shadow dungeon bosses deal twice as much.
Haha i quit in the middle of my download last time. I actually gunna download this time =P
Yeah give it a go, whoever said they were deciding on uninstalling Perfect World for it, do it. I’ve been playing PW for ages now, doesn’t compare to this.
This game has alot going for it the only problem I have is the lag(then again im on a laptop) Definantly recommend this one 9/10
This is a very good free-to-play mmo. Its pretty, well paced, and provides interesting decisions. The economic system is very interesting and actually functions much better than much higher profile mmo’s. Worth a try for anyone interested by the genre. But as mentioned, the game code must be sub-optimal, because you really should be able to play on a lesser computer (its not that flashy!). But even with all the graphics options turned down an older computer won’t cut it.
Is this game only Japaneese?
lol i loved the FF games so i will probably love this game. I like the blood splatter when u thrash the poor little creatures roflmao jk but teh blood is still kinda kool..can someone email me how bad the lag is on a computer with low ram thnx!! email- graydonandrews@hotmail.com (60 % downloading!)
I still dont know….. IS THIS GAME IN JAPANEESE?
I’m downloading tihs as we speak. Slow DL speed though, but not TOO bad. 314 kb/sec is tolerable but it definitely shouldn’t have to take 1 1/2 hours. I have also been playing Perfect World and Cabal Online lately, and honestly I think Perfect World has superb scenery but I have more fun in Cabal. Also Exteel is surprisingly fun. Project Torque = best racing game ever. And Project Powder is alright, but a bit too slow I think. Anyway, I can’t wait to play this game. Hopefully it will run smoothly, but Perfect World runs smoothly so I guess it should.
Cross the game is not in Japanese if it was it would have been stated in the description. The video is somewhat misleading
<..>
=P
Mk.. I’ve played all sorts of games, mainly MMORPG’S Latley.. such as Fiesta, Cabal, WoW, Perfect World, Runescape (a lot of people have <_<), Flyff, ASDA Story, Holic ect ect…
Then I came across this and I literally uninstalled all my other games..
Glad I did ;D
Sure it takes a long a** time to download.. but in my opinion it’s worth it ^^
I may only be in my 40’s (the game not real life ¬_¬ (18 -.-))
But I love the game already =D
So yeah.. rant over.. it rocks…. <_<
And for those who are asking if it’s in english… best translation in a game I’ve ever seen o.O
Download it! ;D 2hours or so (less… but meh) Is nothing compared to the many hours you’ll spend playing it ^^
(Yeah I know…. I’m sad.. =P)
The lag…. there is none for me, sometimes when there is a full 27vs27 battle but overall, unless you have a wooden computer, the game itself does wonderfully
FINALLY, lol ty, Nibiru
hey ive been lookin at this… think i might try it either this or requiem…. how good is the character customization? the review doesent really say anything…..
-> housty:
The character customization really isn’t that in-depth, at least in the start (I didn’t maintain my interest long enough to explore the sub-classes, if that’s what you were referring to — and if so, sorry). You have very, very few face/body/clothes options.
By the way, for anyone wondering about the “strategy” aspect of the battles, don’t go in expecting Final Fantasy Tactics-esque skill sets, grid movement, and job trees.
When in battle, your units, as well as the enemy’s, are arranged in neat little rows. You don’t actually move any of your characters within battle. You select a unit and then left-click an enemy to attack, or you right-click that enemy to use an offensive spell (or you right-click one of your units to use a healing spell, if you have them).
The combat system is actually very simplistic (you don’t have to fumble around with hotkeys like in Perfect World, World of Warcraft, and other similar games), but at the same time, this means you really don’t have a lot of battle options.
The game is utterly gorgeous to look at (possibly even better than Perfect World on maxed-out settings), but the combat honestly doesn’t appeal to me, as I was expecting strategy gameplay with a lot more complexity and depth.
nice yeh it does look tight, its easy when ure like 50 below but when u get higher it gets kind of.. iritating ure being hit like 1000 damage but overall its awsome!
I hate turn based games. I hate strategy based game. I hate controlling multiplayers.
So it astounds me why do I love this game??
I downloaded it, not knowing it was turn-based until 1/3 of the download was done. So I said , what the hell, ill give it a try.
I played one battle and said Fuck this.
Today I got on to give it a second chance. I got into it and now I cant stop playing
THIS GAME IS AMAZING.
5/5 No doubt.
this is definitely one of the top 3, if not the top free MMO. Even though stuff gets really expensive at high lvl, this is the most balanced game as you can get every nearly item and have fun in every aspect of the game to its fullest without even paying a cent. Please ignore the person above this who explains how the fighting is. It is more simple than FF, but apparently he is some noob who didn’t play long enough to realise there is more to a battle than simply left click right click. Anyone who isn’t a noob knows that. They should ban people from posting reviews unless they’re like above lvl 50 haha. Well anyway, this game is really addicting and it is far better than most of the MMOs out there. The world is huge, there is many cities and dozens of new cities being added soon. Lots of fighting areas. Lots of stuff to do when you don’t feel like fighting. Overall, the game is just continuously fun. The grinding in it, well, it’s grinding what do you expect? All I can say is don’t choose a long ranged as your main for your first character.
-> Nibiru:
*Sigh* My sincerest apologies if I actually did have (or present) a false impression of this game’s gameplay. However, my first impressions of the gameplay were very negative (not just in terms of the number of options available, but also of what passed for “strategy” in this game; I *don’t mind* classic RPG gameplay in which you pick a skill and a target for each of your characters, but that’s hardly what I call “strategy-based gameplay”).
So, Nibiru, if I may ask (since you seem to be so much more aware of the intricacies of this game), just how many different skills are available in this game?
each merc has like 3 to 5 skills possible for it, with 3 new mercs coming soon. There is 30 types of crafting jobs.
The strategy in the game is really in PVP, where many of your choices make a significant difference. Against enemies, it is a little more simple, however something even as small as your formation/the order and position of your characters makes a big difference.
It isn’t like a crushing amount of strategy, which is good, but you probably need a bigger brain to be a top player in this game than in something like World of Warcraft, where there is pretty much no thought involved.
-> Nibiru:
Thanks for the clarification.
Yeah, as I think I noted, there is more strategy in this game than in something like World of Warcraft or Perfect World (not to say that those games don’t have “strategy” — I’m sure there are “right” ways and wrong ways to play the classes) — it’s just that I was quite frankly hoping for a really complex system, such as that found in “tactics” games. Does this make sense? (I’m citing my own personal preference, not a “problem” on the part of the game.)
game failed me, i suggest that as soon as possible you start doing free league…if you cant see yourself playing the game dying to pvp all day long, then its not the game for you. Cause after lvl 50 you will be forced to pvp just to keep the stamina to quest/grind for levels…i literaly blew all 50 of my stamina between 3 collect/kill quests after lvl 60 just about every day within 2 hours. You can do other stuff to get back stamina but that will get maybe 1 more kill/collect quest done. Basically all the game comes down to is its turn based pvp, which is dull and repetitive to me, plus dominated by ranged classes thanks to the random scrolls, if you dont have 2-3 available ranged classes each turn and a scroll pops up in the backlines theres a good chance you could end up with your entire team silenced for the next 2 turns or some other dumb bs thing. Ive lost games that i was dominating simply cause id attack someone with a scroll and have 2 of my 3 ranged classes miss then have my entire team get silenced, or my opponents entire team get holy guard, taking off stuns or silences i had on him.
Crafting is a little over glorified as well. Sure there are 30 different crafting skills, but they are all the same exact concept for leveling it up. Teach other people the craft, or buy an excessive amount of the materials needed and autocraft/afkcraft. There is no unique thing about each skill.
The game is also OVERLOADEDLY OVERLOADED WITH OVERLOADS OF OVERLOAD BOTS. There are a million Bots, probably more than actual players lol, and it gets worse the higher the areas you are in.
For a gew good points, playing in a party in a dungeon that is 3-5 levels higher than you and getting 3 groups against your party can be fun.
Also the world map is large, i probably saw only 60% of it by the time i hit 70.
It also has a system that strongly encourages partying especially at higher levels, keeping you involved with other players.
Also leveling is fairly fast from probably 1-70 didnt get any higher so cant say from there. Although the higher you get the more you will need a party to level effectively, and not just an ldp(long distance party in which you get extra xp bonuses everytime a party member finishes a fights + exp tomes). You will need them to be grinding with you in the same fights to save stamina. Which imo slows down the speed i grind at, but in the long run levels me up faster since i can grind much much longer.
so how does the partying work if there is no other humans in the game is there like bots running around and you talk to them to get them in your group?
Me and my girlfriend have been playing this for the past two weeks now and this is a great game. There’s a friendly community with people who are willing to help newbies and not yell stuff like: omfg noob lol!! I got presents from high leveled players on regular occassions, and they wanted nothing in return. Questing is fun and rewarding, pvp is solid, teaming up with other players is actually rewarding for a change, there’s auto-walk (not so clunky anymore), so no tedious searching for NPC’s anymore, the music is great, the graphics are stylish and to top it all off: it’s free to download and play and you don’t need a top system to run it adequately either. It’s not my first MMO, I’ve played WoW, Everquest 2, EVE Online, Ultima Online, Auto Assault, Dungeon Runners, Twelve Sky, Last Chaos, Conquer 2.0 to name but a few. This manages to stick out and be original, and that’s saying something as well. Try it, you might like it!!
im looking for a game thats close to guild wars and war warcraft something fast to download please if you find a game write me on my email clawz98@yahoo.com
and the game looks fun!:):):):):):):):):):):):):)
write me please
and do you have to buy the game???
so i tried to play it today but they need to fix the graphics glitches and random disconnects
I downloaded this and I REALLY enjoy it. The best MMO EVER! However, the lag is really getting me down. I have to restart the game about every 20 minutes because of this damn lag. And the graphic settings do nothing to help.
9.5/10. Only reason I’m rating it 9.5/10 is because of the difficulty. FF is harder than this, however it doesn’t have a time limit. This doesn’t take as much thinking as there is not much magic or strategy at all. Entering a battle gets annoying when you Auto-Move and a monster jumps right in front of you right when you just finished a boss and your mercs are dead. The difficulty jump at level 50 is not hard if you have upgraded armor, not weapons. Weapons can be a huge up too if you’re like that, but I prefer defence. Strange that I see the two best classes to be Spartan and Viking.
Oh for all you struggling with stanima, Sit THEN log out. I did that. I logged off with 49 stanima, sat, logged off. and when I woke up and came back on I had 237 stanima.
