Cyber Nations is a free to play text based MMO game that puts you in charge of your own country. Most nation customization choices are superficial things such as the name of your currency (Dollar, Euro, Dinar, etc) and the location of your country on a world map. But even these help make your nation feel unique. In order for your nation to function effectively, it must have enough infrastructure, land, and soldiers to keep things running smoothly. Your nation’s land will increase naturally but more can be purchased if you wish. Infrastructure helps your nation’s efficiently with the land it has which helps raise population and income. Soldiers help keep order and must be paid a small daily wage. Each day you may collect taxes from your population which you can then use to pay your daily expenses and further grow your State.

You can choose how high you want to tax your citizens, lower tax rates will make it easier for your citizens to earn higher income while higher rates will discourage them from earning to their potential. High tax rates also effect the happiness of your nation. How happy your population is has a significant effect on the growth of your nation. Luckily, there are many ways to increase this factor. You will be informed on the nation overview page which form of government and which religion your people prefer, it is recommended you switch these options depending on the will of the people.

Trading with nations of the same team color as you will also increase happiness. As you increase your income, you’ll have the option to purchase technology which further increases happiness, income and other factors. You will also be able to purchase Improvements such as Banks, a Dock, Hospitals and other buildings that provide your nation with additional bonuses. When you create your nation, you’ll be given two random natural resources. Each resource provides a specific bonus to your country and it is important to trade with other nations to get the maximum number of bonuses. Certain resources work in unison to provide even more useful resources, for example if you control Iron and Coal, you will receive an additional resource: Steel. Since you may only tax your population once a day, there will be a limit on how much you can accomplish daily. This limiting factor will most effect you in the first month or so, later you’ll have enough money in reserve to train and deploy multiple armies in a single day.

If you play Cyber Nations as a single player nation simulator, you’ll have fun for a few weeks but the game was intended to be played on a much broader level. Players may join alliances to help deter others from attacking them. Similarly, large alliances can use their size to attack and pillage weaker states and collect the spoils of victory. One of the greatest strengths of Cyber Nations is the large and active community. Minutes upon creating your account you’ll receive messages enticing you to join alliances with offers of foreign aid and other goodies to win you to their side.

The larger alliances even produce recruitment videos and post them on You Tube to help bolster their ranks. To get the most out of Cyber Nations you must get involved in this deep and active Alliance scene. Many Alliances have their own websites and IRC channels devoted to planning attacks on their enemies. The forums and Game Info on the official site are both very helpful resources and provide details on every aspect of the game. Overall, Cyber Nations is one the most interesting and most active text based MMOs available and, more importantly, its completely free. Browser based games, especially ones like Cyber Nations with no graphics are not for everyone but if you are interested in the genre, Cyber Nations is a great choice.
