Mabinogi Reviewed
One of the first things you’ll realize about Mabingo is how silly the characters look, but don’t let that stop you from playing this unique game. The second thing you’ll notice is you have to decide what age your character begins at. The older your character, the more stats he begins with, but the less time he has to grow in game. Because of this, I highly recommend you ignore the game’s advice and start at the youngest possible age.
As long as you do all the quests you receive, you will level rapidly and soon catch up in strength with the older players. The upbeat atmosphere keeps you interested, and the User Interface is manageable. Mabinogi has a unique dungeon instancing feature [Think WoW] where you sacrifice an item at an alter in order to generate a dungeon for your party to crawl through. The more powerful and expensive the item you sacrifice, the harder and more rewarding the dungeon will be. Sacrificing junk items generates easy and less rewarding dungeons.
As mentioned, every real-life week will age your character by one game year and your stats will grow. Once your character becomes elderly you can revert to a kid again and keep your progress, however this process is very tedious and time consuming unless you use a cash shop item to speed it up. Mabinogi’s character progression is driven much more by skills than leveling which is a welcomed change, as using skills will improve their rank and increase your stats.
If you want to get the most out of Mabinogi, it’s recommended that you try some of the the cool bonus features like the music system. Mabinogi allows you to buy instruments and compose your own music. Walking through town and hearing familiar tunes from Zelda and Final Fantasy always brings a smile to my face. Unfortunately, Mabinogi handles combat rather poorly. Combat is slow and feels broken, as your character rolls around all over the place while fighting. Skills seem to work at random and as with any MMO, attaining higher levels involve lots of grinding.
