Phoenix Dynasty Online is a 2D Fantasy MMORPG set in ancient China. Gameplay features four factions and an open PvP environment where anyone can be attacked almost anywhere in the game. Phoenix Dynsaty Online looks a lot like a fusion of Mu Online and Secret of the Solstice. Phoenix Dynasty Online has a lot of features, but unfortunately, lacks a detailed tutorial.

Phoenix Dynasty Online
Start off your adventure in Phoenix Dynasty Online by selecting one of the games four classes; Assassin, Paladin, Priest, Wizard. Every class is pretty self explanatory except Asssassin. When you hear the word Assassin you would normally think a stealthy dagger user, or some sort of thief, but in Phoenix Dynasty Online an assassin is an archer for some reason. Another small complaint with this game is that there are only four classes, which greatly limits character uniqueness, as they’ll be a hundred paladins just like you running around the game world.
Combat in Phoenix Dynasty Online is actually done surprisingly well. Combat is fast paced and closely resembles that of Mu Online where and Diablo 2 where monsters die quickly, but there are always lots of monsters to kill. Although the graphics look dated, spell animations and effects are done remarkably well. The game’s graphics most closely resemble a fusion of Secret of the Solstice and Tales of Pirates.
The game starts off by directing you to a beginner NPC which will give you a series of quests to do, and I strongly recommend you go ahead and actually do them, as Quests are the best source of experience in Phoenix Dynasty Online. They’ll be a couple of kill quests, where you ge to go outside town and kill some random monsters and a lot more of “go talk to this guy 5 feet away from me” quests. Although the quests aren’t very creative they are extremely rewarding. You can easily get to level 10 by completing the starting quests. When you see an oppurtunity to do a quest in this game, take advantage of that oppurtunity and do it, as questing is the fastest way to level.
The only real character customization you’ll find in Phoenix Dynasty Online is the game’s five element system, which basically allows everyone to specialize in a certain element upon completing the beginner quests. Depending on which element you pick, your character will recieve certain bonuses. For example, those that select the water element will be rewarded with increased maximum mana and mana regeneration, an obvious selection for Wizards, but also selectable by every other class as well.
One positive aspect of Phoenix Dynasty Online is the game’s mount system. Unlike games like World of Warcraft, where players are forced to wait until higher levels in order to use mounts, Phoenix Dynasty Online provides free mounts for everyone at level 5 that can be used at level 15. There are also many different mounts in the, all of which vary in speed. It’s certainly a great idea to let lower level players have access to mounts, as it makes traveling easier. The game also rewards higher level players by letting them have access to better mounts, which I believe is a much better system than what World of Warcraft has, where players have to be level 40 to get a mount.
The most interesting feature in Phoenix Dynasty Online is definitely the game’s open PvP system. Players can be attacked and attack other players almost anywhere in the game, which forces players to always be on their toes. There are three different flags you can set for your character; Peace mode, Duel mode and PK mode. The names are pretty self explanatory, as in Peace mode, you’re opting not to fight other players, in Duel mode, you’re looking to fight people one on one and lastly, in PK mode you’re looking for a fight from anyone. Players in PK mode can attack anyone and also be attacked by anyone. Players who are flagged as “peace mode” can still be attacked by PKs, but for every time a PK kills a player in Peace mode, they earn “wickedness points” which are basically penalties against the killer [Exp loss upon death or even jail time upon death]. Since I’m a huge fan of open PvP, I find a system like this invigorating, as it’ll keep everyone on their toes and add an entirely new layer of game play. Check out the game guide in the Guides / Resources section for a detailed explanation of all three flags.
Although Phoenix Dynasty Only is jam packed with a lot of things to do, the game fails to explain all the features. The lack of a tutorial will leave players clueless on what to do, as if you try leveling up in Phoenix Dynasty Online by grinding, you’ll be spending a lot more time than you need to, as questing is the best way to level up. The game has a very unique crafting system, as the materials you use affect the stats of the item you craft. You could create the same item using two different combination of resources, and the item crafted with the better raw materials will have better attributes. This is a great way to promote the game’s economy, but the game fails to elaborate on crafting system. The least the developers could have done was to have a basic in game tutorial that explained how to make items, but instead, you’ll have to fiddle around with it until you figure it out on your own. Craft skills in Phoenix Dynasty Online are referred to as “Living skills” in the game.
Another complaint with Phoenix Dynasty Online is the game’s poor English translations and the incomplete game guide on the official site. Trying to decipher what the NPCs have to say in this game isn’t just a chore, it’s a challenge. Instead of trying to follow the game’s story, I recommend you just skip through all the quest dialogue and just check out the quest summaries on your “quest log” page. The game’s official site also has a lot of missing pages. If you try heading over to the “state overview” page on the game guide, the link just points you back to the game guide page, where you already were. This actually happens when you click a lot of the links on the game guide page. Phoenix Dynasty Online is still a fun game, and worth checking out though.
