Q-World Review
The only available English version of Q-World is published by Cubizone which is a Malaysian publisher. Sadly the English translations are riddled with errors and are difficult to read and many of the players do not speak English fluently. If you can look past these faults, Q-World offers an interesting game experience.
Account creation is needlessly complex, players will have to create a Cubizone account than manually activate Q-World on that account. Character creation is far more simple, players can pick their gender and between 5 face styles & 4 hair styles. All players start as Rookies and are greeted with a help box that acts as the optional tutorial. Players can eventually chose to become either Rangers or Poets and can further diversify at higher levels. Q-World has a great user interface but it takes a while to get used to it. Quest givers are shown as purple dots on the mini map while yellow dots mark NPCs that players can hand in certain items to for rewards or reputation. Clicking on the mini-map or the main map will cause your character to auto-walk which is another great feature. Q-World has tons of quests and a nice quest log to keep track of it all but the poor text translations mean players will often be confused on what a quest is asking them to do.
Players have two movement options, point and click with the mouse or use the W,A,S,D keys. Combat is mostly point and click though skills are assigned to hot keys. (1-10, F1-F10) Combat is relatively fast paced and players can use pets and even fight while mounted. Like most mmorpgs, players will end up fighting forest animals for the first few levels which can get tedious. The low experience gained for hunting is discouraging but luckily quests have large experience rewards. Few Asian MMORPGs put enough emphasis on PvP so its nice to see that Q-World didn’t ignore this area. New players can protect themselves from being targeted by others but eventually players will have to get used to the open PvP environment by joining guilds and waging war for control of different areas.
Q-World has an interesting setting (medieval China) and cartoony graphics which are easy on the eyes. Interestingly, there is a live chat support feature built in though I’ve never tested it. Q-World is more difficult for beginners to get into than most new MMORPGs mainly because of the poor instructions and quest text but with a little effort, players can get to the point where they understand how things work and start enjoying the game. Even with its nice interface, pets, and mounts, the biggest problem with Q-World is that it doesn’t do anything differently enough from the dozens of other free, 3D, Fantasy, MMORPGs already available.
