Rubies of Eventide

Rubies of Eventide is a 3D Fantasy MMORPG with 7 races and over 90 classes. All characters can learn any of the game’s dozens of skills. Rubies of Eventide clearly gets its inspiration from older MMORPGs like Everquest. Like EQ, the graphic style is a bit out dated and may deter some players.

Overview

Review

Originally released in 2003 as a subscription based game, was eventually turned into a free to play game supported by player donations. While the game is free to play, players who donate do receive some benefits. Among these is access to the game servers even if they are full. Non paying members cannot enter the game world if the servers are full and must wait for others to log out. Oddly, the server caps are very low, meaning there are very few people playing at any given time.

has plenty of graphic options which means if your computer can handle it, Rubies graphics can beefed up quite a bit. At higher settings the graphics are smooth but still feel outdated, and much of the character and monster designs are boring at any setting. But there is some charm in this traditional Western Fantasy/Medieval graphic style so old schoolers may feel right at home. After playing so many inspired games, the graphics in RoE came as a relief. Rubies has a great deal of character customization as well, there are seven races: Human, Dwarf, Elf, Orc, Gnome, Ogre, and Leshy. Each race has several face and hair style choices and hair color options. What really sets apart though is the class and skill choices. There are over 90 classes in Rubies and while many sound similar, each has slightly different skill distributions. Many of the classes can specialize in various weapon styles, adding even more depth. After picking a race, class, and specialization, players must distribute stat points among the four stats: Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, and Constitution. Next players are given a few hundred DP (skill points) to distribute. Though the game really doesn’t explain it, its best to beef up the skills your class is already proficient at.

After getting through the extensive character creation process, players will find them selves in a small town surrounded by tutorial NPCs. It is up to the player to talk to these NPCs or to simply ignore them. If you have any MMO experience, they can all be safely ignored. Players who make it outside town will be greeted by a vast, empty looking green field. This is when the game’s small population really does its damage. There is nothing I hate more than being the only player in sight. Combat in seems to be very rough and shoddy. Firstly, combat is slow paced and looks odd. Characters sometimes don’t swing or attack from yards away. Combat almost always feels laggy and most of the monsters have very poor AI. Goblins just stand still where they spawn, waiting for players to find them and slay them. Luckily, the User Interface is very clean and easy to navigate. Radar, inventory, character info, etc all get their own box which can be moved anywhere on the screen. The camerae however is fixed and cannot be turned, though players are free to zoom in and out.

Being a subscription based game that didn’t quite make it, the player base in is very small. To make things even worse, the developers have put player caps on the three game servers, restricting the amount of players who can be logged in at a given time. Current estimates claim that there are never more than 80-120 people on at any given time. Despite its size, the is very helpful to new players. Players can expect their questions to be answered either in-game or on the official forums. seems to cater to a small group of long-time players and to older players interested in role playing. Unless you fall into one of these categories, odds are won’t interest you. Besides the nostalgic value, I cannot recommend this outdated fantasy game when there are dozens of newer and more polished contenders in the .

This is one of those games where it will need to become your second job if you wish to progress anywhere in it. - It’s not the grind exactly but you must pay a lot of attention to your character and where the points are going etc…

People who like playing dice/paper RPG’S would probably love this game.

The people who like to have speed and hack fests in game .. will grow bored with this game very very quickly.

this game is kinda cool. I mean I love that there r 90! classes. But its hard to choose and the fighting kinda sucks. And when i died i just layed there not respawning or anything just laying there. I could exit so i had restart my com.

A few untruths in the description. The camera is not fixed for one. You can change it in many different ways. Plus the mobs don’t just stand around waiting for you to kill them. There are many things listed here that aren’t exactly truthful. It seems the one who put this up was unhappy and decided to vent. I for one am apart of this great community. New players are always welcome. Don’t download from this site if you wish to play. The forums are located at http://forums.eventide.net/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=cfrm

There is a download to the version .96 plus the patch is there as well. New content is being currently added as I type this. The developers are all volunteers and this game is donation based. A free to play game that are rare to find now adays. Plus the support site if you have any questions is located at http://support.eventide.net

Once again don’t judge a game by someones experience. I love this game so much that I have become a volunteer for it and would gladly help out anyone who is interested. Go to the forums and register and then you can pm Orius.

I have been playing Rubies of Eventide for 3-4 years now… and I must say I really enjoy the game… There is a few thing I must correct with the statements above… the camera is not fixed… Use your Number pad to change camera view… Zero for example will scroll you through serval differnt camera’s such as First person Third person free Third person locked… And Goblings DO NOT stand in one place and wait to be attacked… the randomly move about the zone also known as the Kaj Blood Plains… There is a reason the the caps on each server… due to if many ppl where on one server it would cause it to crash…
When you die you can ask for a rezz or /rtt… As said in the Text box when you die… When you /rtt above lvl 6 on Phoenix and Fireopals You recieve a death penatly which you must work off by killing… and once above lvl 6 if you /rtt you will lose all items that are not soul bound or Protected…
And with new development there is a Beta Server *Nemsis* which is Player vs. Player where there is New Mobs and Spells and Items… The Spells have been moved to all Three Servers.. And don’t think your first toon will always work out… My first toon till I got the hang of the game was really crappy… But after learning the game I was able to build a toon that I could lvl with…

Re-reading my write up, I maintain that I was fair to the game. I was wrong about the camerae but the goblins really DID just stand there when I played.

I gave the game praise where it was due & pointed out the flaws. My ‘reviews’ are more like introductions to each game and I always encourage viewers to try out a game that looks interesting — our goal at MMOHub is not to pick for you but to expose you to many free games that you never knew even existed.

This game is awesome. My husband and I have been playing for about 3 years now and it is a lot of fun. The goblins don’t stand around and new things are being added all the time. Just like any game you have to figure it out and play for more then a week. There are guilds which were not pointed out. I am in quite a few good ones. And yes it can take a long time to get a character up to the max level, but that is the point. If you want an easy game do not try this one. My son is almost 10 and plays also and loves it. He loves to be able to talk to other players and hunt with them. The game has tons of awesome players. Most are very helpful as long as you follow the rules. I wish more people would play and bring it back up to the way it used to be. We used to have 50-60 people online each server at any given time. If you stick with the game it is totally worth it. Take care.
    Thundra!
