SEAL Online was released in North America in late 2007 by YNK Interactive, the folks behind the recently released Rohan. While Rohan is a more traditional fantasy experience, SEAL is much more light hearted. SEAL Online most closely resembles Fly For Fun, by gPotatoe in terms of graphic style and game play.

When creating their first character, players can chose to start as a ‘beginner’ or one of those six classes. Choosing to start as a beginner allows players to remain neutral and make the ultimate class choice at level 10 rather than at character creation. The six classes in SEAL are: Priest, Knight, Warrior, Craftman, Jester, Mage. Similarly, there are six stats in SEAL and they are; STR, AGi, INT, VIT, WIS, LUK. Each class has a primary and secondary stat, for example the Mage class starts with +3 INT/+2 WIS. Appearance customization is limited to gender and a choice of several hair styles.

SEAL Online has a basic point and click interface. Movement and combat shouldn’t be much of a mystery to any player. The first few levels will be played very similarly by all classes. Oddly, SEAL Online decided to force players to ‘learn’ skills like sitting down, forming parties, whispering other users, and other functions that should of simply been automatic. This isn’t usually an issue unless a player forgets to put skill points in the aforementioned skills. Each level players are rewarded with stat points and skill points which should be distributed right away to help speed up the grind. After reaching level 10 and gaining actual offensive skills, it becomes almost a requirement to carry hundreds of healing items (for hp and mana) around with you at all times. This can get a bit frustrating since the money players make hunting during the early levels will be used almost exclusively to fund healing items. One unique combat feature in SEAL is the combo system that allows melee classes to preform more powerful hits as a small bar fills under their HP meter. Since Mages must cast spells from afar and can’t risk getting close enough to melee with a staff, the combo system is largely useless for the Mage class. Players must purchase spells at their trainers originally, but after the initial purchase may increase the level of the skill anywhere in the game world.

There are two servers in SEAL Online but one is relatively low population. While there are plenty of people in the two main towns, the game does feel more empty than some of the larger free to play MMORPGs. SEAL Online does have some side features, such as fishing which can net players some free healing items, and a party system that rewards bonus EXP for partying. SEAL Online also has an odd dating system where a male and female character can form a relationship and teleport to one another. Even with these features, SEAL Online is mostly a straight forward grind fest. This isn’t a problem for the first 20 or so levels but as the grind takes longer and longer, the game can get repetitive. SEAL Online is not the most unique game, but the graphic style is interesting and the game dynamics are solid and functional. SEAL Online is well worth trying if you’re a fan of the anime-inspired graphic style.
