Shadow of Legend is a 2D Fantasy MMORPG that can be played on either a PC or a mobile phone. While the graphics are unimpressive and combat is nothing new, its one of the first mobile phone MMORPGs. Join one of two factions, Chaos or Agnes and defend your realm as one of four classes.

Shadow of Legend Reviewed

Shadow of Legend went into open beta in 2008 and is the first MMORPG where players can access the same game world with either a PC or smart phone. The file size is surprisingly large for such a simple looking 2D game, over 2000 MB. The patching process is also lengthy, taking at least 20 minutes. Not to long ago Final Fantasy 11 introduced us the to concept of MMORPGs accessible simultaneously on consoles and PCs, now Shadow of Legend has taken us one step further, MMORPGs on our phones!

There are two factions at war with each other in Shadow of Legend; Chaos and Agnes. The Chaos faction includes the Orcs and Dwarves while the Agnes is composed of the Humans and Elves. Each side has the same four classes: Combatant, Mage, Monk, and Archer. Luckily, each class has a large skill tree and each character can specialize differently. Each class starts with a different distribution of the four stats and those stats are: STR, STA, AGI, and INT.

The graphics and environment in Shadow of Legend is very disappointing from a PC view. This game looks and feels like a beta test of an action RPG from the early 1990s. Your character jitters as it moves and the combat animations are disgraceful. Similarly, most of the sound effects are not pretty. Each race starts in a different area where they have dozens of quests available to them. Oddly, the quest text is extremely long which is quite useless since its full of grammatical errors. Almost everyone will simply skip the quest text and concentrate on the objectives. Shadow of Legend has a great auto move feature, by opening up the map (m) and double clicking anywhere on it, the player’s character will begin to automatically run to that location. The quest journal will usually have the names of key NPCs highlighted in green, double click these NPC names will again cause the character to automatically move to their location. The only other game I can think of that has such a system is World of Kung Fu. I can’t stress how useful this feature is and I hope to see it in all future games.

Shadow of Legend has several features geared towards the end game to keep things interesting. These include large scale guild wars, guild bases to manage, and difficult dungeons with bosses at the end. Several player mounts are available such as horses, bears, lions, and even ridable slimes. Even with these features the fundamentals of Shadow of Legend are too lacking for me to recommend, at least as a PC MMORPG. If you have a smart phone capable of playing the game and have nothing else to do on your daily commute, thats a different story. In that case, I would highly recommend giving Shadow of Legend a try for the novelty alone.
