Shot Online Reviewed
When I first came across Shot Online, I knew I had to try it simply because of the novelty of it being a Golf MMO. Character creation isn’t very deep: you pick one of six base characters with varying strengths and weaknesses. Later, you can buy new clothes to make a unique appearance. You start off the game in a tutorial that will teach you the basics. If you’ve played any golf, bowling, or similar sports games before, odds are that you’ve already encountered the key element behind Shot Online. Yes, it is that bar that goes up and down where you click when it is at the angle and strength you want. You also have to factor in the randomly changing wind.
Once you’re past the tutorial you’ll find yourself in town where people spend their off-course time. Entering a golf course costs a bit of in game money, which seems odd to me, but you start with enough to get you through many rounds. Playing through a course with other players will increase your experience, but its frustrating since the game play is slow even without having to wait for your turn. That is my chief complaint with this game. You spend too much time NOT playing.
Leveling up and earning enough money to customize your avatar’s wardrobe may feel like an accomplishment for the first few levels, but once you get past the early levels, things will slow down and you’ll find Shot Online to be a long and rarely rewarding experience. Of course, if golf is an interest of yours, you may enjoy Shot Online more than I did. The game does offer long term features such as Guilds and large tournaments, which are complete with entry fees and large payouts, and other distractions to keep you active in the Shot Online community if you are so inclined.
If you are interested in golf, or are just curious about how a Golf MMO plays, like I was, give Shot Online a try. As a side note, it seems there are two services currently offering Shot Online, Gala-Net and Games Campus. I played on the Gala-Net service and the links I provided are for that service. Both sites offer the game for free but with a cash shop, so pick which ever suits your fancy.
