Splash Fighters Review
Splash Fighters is a small game which has a remarkable amount of features. Originally published by GamersFirst, the publishers of War Rock and Sword of the New World, Splash Fighters is now run on its own site. Splash Fighters is a cartoony brawler most closely resembling Rumble Fighters.
Character creation is Splash Fighters is remarkably in depth for such a small game, players chose from 16 different avatars, 2 for each of the 8 classes: Fighter, Soldier, Spy, Juggernaut, Knight, Telepather, Space Agent, and Sumo Wrestler. There are dozens of face, eye, mouth, and clothing options to give your character a unique look. After character creation, players are given the option to either play though the tutorial or jump right into the fray. For anyone with game experience, the tutorial really is optional. Splash Fighers is a simple game, you move with the arrow keys & preform other actions with the Z X C and V keys. Nevertheless, the tutorial is short and worth completing.
Splash Fighters has some very dull navigation menus. The lobby and game rooms look ugly and respond slowly. I didn’t experience lag in-game and it leaves me puzzled why the menu screens were so slow. The game makes up for these faults with a large variety of game modes. Players can play through a dozen or so single player missions or play cooperatively to clear stages of NPC baddies in true old school beat ‘em up fashion. The traditional team deathmatch mode is generally the most popular mode, however. In this mode the last man standing wins the round for his team with each match consisting of 3 rounds.
Another area where Splash Fighters delivers is the sheer number of maps and items available. There are over 20 maps to chose from which is more than many much larger, more developed games of this nature offer. Similarly, throughout the level players will find an assortment of weapons ranging from baseball bats, handguns, flamethrowers, battle axes, laser guns, snipers, and many others. Some classes are more proficient with certain types of weapons than others but it is generally better to be armed with something than fight it out with your fists.
A major fault Splash Fighters suffers is in the presentation. Not only are the graphics unimpressive but the music and sound effects are very dull and repetitive. Having one piece of music constantly droning in the background leaves the game feeling incomplete. But Splash Fighters never sets out to be the most in depth and detailed game. Instead, it is a simple game to play that still requires a degree of skill. I got destroyed by veteran players in my first few rounds online. I would advise new players to play several single play missions in order to master blocking and counter attacks so they don’t end up making a fool out of themselves online.
