Overview

TalesRunner Overview

TalesRunner, which started open beta Oct. 16, 2008, is the first and only free MMO racer where players use their feet rather than cars (or karts), to win the race. However, there is no doubt that like Kart n Crazy and Come on Baby, TalesRunner draws its inspiration from the classic Mario Kart series.

Players choose from one of four pre-made characters, each with a different distribution of four stats - Speed, Acceleration, Power and Control. There are three key play modes - Single, Team and Relay. Each mode can be played in either an 8-person or 30-person max room.

There is also a ‘park’ where players can walk around and socialize. The item mall is somewhat empty since the game is still in beta.

TalesRunner Full Review

By Cody ‘Neramaar’ Hargreaves

I can’t for the life of remember who it was, but the first person that mentioned Tales Runner to me said that it was a little bit like Mario Kart, and for the most part they were spot on with that comparison. They simply forgot to mention one minor detail – in Tales Runner, the players are on foot.

Ready… Steady… GO!
Tales Runner is much like Mario Kart in a number of ways - if of course you removed the ‘Kart’, the ‘Mario’, and entered the game into the 100m Sprint Category of the Olymipics. Like many other MMO Mario Kart adaptations (Kart N Crazy, to use an example) the main objective in Tales Runner is a simple one – beat your opponents to the finish line, and have a blast as you do. In this aspect of the game, Tales Runner is nothing short of a grand success. There are however some other pieces to the puzzle that don’t fit as nicely as the rest.

The Joy’s of Character Selection
One such place, and the one that infuriates me more than any other, is character selection. One would think that without the ability to select a vehicle of some kind (that there would be a large variety of available characters to choose form. In the case of Tales Runner, this is not so. Infact, players are only given the option between one of four characters, two girls and two boys, and although players will eventually be able to purchase additional clothing – I personally found it to be lacking effort, and in turn, diversity.

Interesting surprises
Having chosen my character (an anime-themed, estrogen-filled male with an oversized ego and annoying grin plastered to his head), it was time to complete the tutorial. Fortunately, my worries regarding character selection options evaporated soon after I bgeun the tutorial. You see, in Tales Runner, players don’t begin their sprint in traditional Olympic Style; they are instead dropped from the sky and sent hurdling toward the ground.

During this time I quickly learned that I was to constantly spam the Jump Key as I fell – forcing my character to flip gloriously through the air as I did – to gain speed and a small head-start in the race. Upon landing I also learned (the hard way, I might add) that I was to press the Sprint Key at the exact moment I landed to perform a Landing Dash and further increase my head start for the race.

Broken Fingers

The only real downfall to this system (and I do mean only, the concept is fantastic) is that the Jump Key is [Left Ctrl], Dash is [Z], and Accelerate is [UP] – and trying to press [Z] while spamming [Ctrl] and navigating your way back to the [UP] key is something that was clearly designed for those of us with three (or four) hands – because I sure as hell couldn’t do it with two!

The following elements of the tutorial saw the same combinations of keys being used for various other activities, such as climbing ropes, leaping platforms, killing goblins, and avoiding whirlpools.

Chaos Effect
Once you complete the tutorial and the seven training exercises that follow there is little else to do other than race – and race you shall. There are three main modes to choose from, Practice, Time Trial and Online. Online will see you racing against others from across the globe in either Standard or Team style matches, and with options stretching from Normal Matches, Relay Matches, and 30-Man Matches.

Inside said matches – players will spend most of their time simply racing, avoiding obstacles, and collecting power-up items. Similar to those found in Mario Kart. This includes everything from super speed dashing to spring boards, head buckets, and beehives. In addition, players are able to dash for a small period of time while they have stamina, which regenerates automatically while not dashing.

Good Times
One feature I haven;t yet mentioned is the fury gauge – that fills slowly whenever your character is struck by an enemy, falls over, or runs out of breath. When filled, players are able to unleash a super speed burst that helps them to catch up to the pack.

While there is no doubt in my mind that Tales Runner is a fun-filled MMO, it’s also in a specific niche that won’t appeal to everyone. But if you’re the type that enjoys a quick bash at Mario Kart – then Tales Runner will certainly help provide you with your weekly fix.

this game is a perfect example of a game released to early, with the mighty dollar in mine. The maps and the racing is fun, the key configuration is weird, and currently none of the items, inculding cash shop items, have stats to improve your character… Well they do have one ability, and that is just to help you earn more money to by more items which can be done without.

    Pros-
    new concept
    awesome maps

    cons-
currently no way to improve you character
items add no attributes except to earn more money.
no character customization at the start.
gets old quick.(had a blast when i started it, and at the end of the day found myself uninstalling.)

In closing, you can disagree with any of my opinions about this game being a waste, if you like progression, but talk to the community. They mostly consist of people who just started, and people who are about to uninstall due to the low replay value.

well, the only reason why they dont have stats to improve your character is because it would sorta imbalance the game from cs users to non-cs users.

in IMO, its a very fun, addicting game.

  13. by Absolution, on 12.06.08 @ 6:11 pm

well, i give this game 0 stzars out of 5, this game is totally crap. bad music, very childish, no funny gameplay, very boring… bad music…… and graphic, I dont wanna lose a word about this, to sum up, this is a totally waste of time.

I played this game for about 30 minutes and i lost the fun…. I just finished the tutorial and made one race against other peoples, well u dont have to run, the key of this game is JUMPING…. JUMPING!!!! so senseless.

If you want a very good racing game, the total opposite of his game try out Street Gears, this game really kicks ass.

Take a look on http://www.gpotato.eu and then the Street Gears page… its very cool, before thrieng this game, pls try street gears, u will make the choice of your life
