Tibia is a 2D Fantasy MMORPG released in 1997 and while it still remains popular, the game offers no compelling reason for new players to join the fray. There are four classes, or “Vocations”, in Tibia: Paladin, Sorcerer, Druid, and Knight.

Tibia was originally released back in 1997 and it deserves a spot on MMOHub simply because it pioneered the payment model we all take for granted today. Tibia was a free to play game back when MMORPGs were just entering the scene and even today it maintains hundreds of thousands of players which shows the staying power of free to play games! But while Tibia deserves an honorable mention, new players should think twice before giving the game a try. Tibia has not aged well and it is clear from the onset that Tibia belongs in a former age.

Character creation and Server selection are made on the Tibia website and the account creation process is a bit strange, players must log in with a given account number rather than creating their own account name. Players are also emailed a random password which they can then edit on the website. Logging into Tibia is another chore, unless you’re playing on a low population server, you must wait in a queue before being allowed into the game. At time this process took up to 10 minutes which is absurd considering there are much fancier games that don’t force you to wait in line for the privilege of playing.

After entering the game world players can customize their characters outfit and colors. The graphics in Tibia are 2d and very primitive, but that is to be expected from a game this old. What cannot be forgiven, however, is the absurdly slow movement and general game speed. Characters move like snails and combat is ridiculous. After targeting a monster and choosing to attack it by hitting ALT, the monster simply takes damage every few seconds. There is no attack animation, no swinging of swords of fists. No graphic what so ever. This sort of combat was acceptable in the late 80s and early 90s on old computer RPGs like Ultima but went out of fashion even before Tibia’s release.

While there are many things wrong and outdated about Tibia, we should not overlook the positive aspects. The User Interface is simple and clean and the game colors are generally bright and vibrant. The chat box at the bottom of the screen is large and simple to follow. Being as old as it is, Tibia will run perfectly on almost any computer. Surprisingly for its age, Tibia also offers a large array of graphic options. Dozens of resolutions are supported along with windowed or full screen play options. These may sound like basic options, but you’d be surprised how many games don’t support high resolutions. Tibia still maintains a very large community but unfortunately, its mostly located in Non-English countries though with English as the universal language of the internet, players won’t have too much trouble finding ways to communicate. If you’re looking for an old school RPG experience or want to try something very different, Tibia is veteran in the room but unless you understand what you’re yourself getting into, avoid Tibia.
