TrackMania Nations Forever Reviewed

TrackMania Nations Forever is the freeware version of the popular TrackMania racing series. Before we go any further, lets get the biggest negative aspect out of the way first: this game is “multi-player” in only the loosest definition. Players make an online account when they first start the game, pick their location, and nickname. Then they join a server to race again hundreds of people at a time… the only problem is none of the other players are on the race track with you. The only exchange between the hundreds of players on a particular server is the chat box and the lap times of the other players. For most genres, this would be a game killer, but in a racing game it hardly seems to matter. Every so often you’ll pass a checkpoint and be reminded of your position in the server. Seeing hundreds of other cars (and potential obstacles) would pose its own problems.

TrackMania does have some great features. The game has great graphics and simple controls. You control your car with the arrow keys: there’s no shift button, no boost button, no item launchers or any of that nonsense. The racing is VERY fast paced and you’ll spend the first few races crashing into the walls on every turn. The default tracks are very well done and exciting: sometimes you’ll be driving sideways or even upside down!

Another huge positive aspect of TrackMania is that The choice of playable tracks is nearly limitless since players can create their own. The default car design is based on the country you picked when you created your account but can be changed or customized any time. TrackMania offers a Global ranking system which compares your records to players across the globe, to players across your country, and even to players in the same state as you. This will give you some motivation to improve your lap times and win races. TrackMania offers everything a devoted racing fan would want: lots of opponents and a way to compare skill with a global audience. If you’re at all interested in racing games, TrackMania is a must-play.
