Trickster Online
Trickster Online has been available for a few years now, but there still seems to be some bugs that the developers haven’t worked out yet. For example, Trickster disabled my speakers on my computer. I couldn’t hear any of the game’s sounds or listen to my own music while playing. Although this bug doesn’t affect everyone, it’s absurd that the developers haven’t fixed it. Once you have Trickster up and running, you’ll notice that the game offers you eight class choices, each of which are named after animals. There are four types of characters: Power, Magic, Sense, and Charm. Each type has a male and female version, but the differences between them is more than gender. For example, a male Power specializes in hitting multiple targets in the late game while the female Power deals massive damage to single targets. No matter which class you pick, the only aspect of your appearance you can change is your hair color.
You’ll begin the game on a ship and the NPC Captain will let you decide whether or not you would like to participate in the tutorial, which is a huge plus. All games should give you a choice whether or not you want to go through a tutorial or not. However, I highly recommend you do so since its very simple and fast, and it rewards you with basic gear, including a pet! The tutorial consists of talking to four NPCs with each teaching you the basics of the interface, items, skills, and combat. Once you’re done talking to them you’ll be transported to the beginner town. Here, another NPC will start you along the newbie quest line which, in broken English, will instruct you to go back and forth between the hunting grounds to the left and the town. Each time, you’ll be asked to kill a monster.
As you level, you’ll notice that Trickster Online has 12 different stats which you must distribute the 4 stat points you gain per level. At first this is very confusing and its easy to ruin your character if you don’t know what to raise. I recommend reading about your class on the Trickster Wiki which is very informative (the link is provided below in the Resources section). There’s not much to Trickster other than clicking your way through cute monsters. You can distract yourself for a while with the game’s built in battle card mini game, but card games in RPGs tend to be simple and repetitive and I’ve never found them entertaining, although it doesn’t hurt to have it as an extra feature.
The other main non-combat feature in Trickster is the ability to Drill almost anywhere outside towns. Depending on what type of Driller you have and where you drill, you’ll receive different items and amounts of experience. Unfortunately, after a while you realize this is even more repetitive than grinding. Overall, Trickster is a pretty average game. The graphics are nice and the game is easy to play. How long the game keeps your interest will depend on if you’re playing with friends or by yourself and on how many bugs you encounter while playing. On occasion, you won’t be able to pick up the loot dropped by monsters. This is not a problem early on but at higher levels, staring at that rare item on the floor for which you’ve been farming for hours, but can’t pick up is very frustrating.
