War Rock Reviewed
War Rock is a mainly team-based FPS where games play out as a series of rounds that are won by either killing the other team or planting a bomb in a specific spot. Sounds simple enough, but getting this game running for the first time is very frustrating. Downloading the game can be slow depending on which download link you choose, and installing the game takes longer than average. The real problems occur at account creation. The site that manages War Rock, Gamers First, has the oddest account creation process. Your account name must have at least one number while your “nickname” cannot include numbers or special characters. Sounds straight forward, but it took many of us at the MMOHub office several attempts to create our accounts. Once you start playing, you’ll notice that unless you’re a paying member the game offers you very limited options. Only the Team vs. Team game mode is available to you, and whats worse, there are only three maps! The best guns are also reserved for paying members. Like the Battlefield series, players in War Rock have several options in terms of what type of soldier to play each round. The Assault class is the most common: it has the best assault rifles and grenades. The Sniper is deadly at long range but vulnerable close up. The Medic can heal herself and teammates, which is useful but the other two classes are nearly useless. The Engineer has a wrench which I have yet to figure out the purpose for. The Heavy Trooper has a Rocket Launcher but with no vehicles, at least in the free member maps, there is no use for it either. Leveling is rather slow in War Rock and since experience gained is based on how you perform, new players will have it the hardest. The game is supported by Punk Buster, the infamous anti-cheat software, so you can expect less hackers than in your average Korean game. The graphics in War Rock are surprisingly good for a free game: the game looks and plays like Battlefield 2 on the lower graphic settings, but with most of the content stripped out. And this is the major flaw in War Rock that keeps it from being a good free game. With only three maps and one game mode, War Rock will tire most players within hours. Some will enjoy the game enough to become paying members, but as a free game, it simply offers too little content.
