Review
5Street is published by the same company that brought us Age of Armor and while one account can access both, each game must be individually activated on their site. Character creation in 5Street can be as simple as choosing gender and one of four body types but players who prefer more detail can opt to customize about a dozen different body parts from leg and arm length to hip and shoulder length and much more. Unfortunately, players don't have many hair style or color choices — these options must instead be purchased later in game.
Places to go
Upon entering the main area of the game, the City, players will notice how much more in depth 5Street is when compared to its its competitors. Players have an HP bar and a ‘business card' which displays their stats, and are free to walk around the game world manually. But thankfully a tool bar on the top of the screen allows instant teleportation to the various locals. There is a lot to explore, I myself counted over 30 areas ranging from a beach, church, mall, school, studio, salon, and more. Sadly, most of these areas are almost always empty because of the games low population.
Dollar Value
Each player is also given a private home where they can chat with friends and put on new cloths that they purchased at the mall. 5Street has an extensive clothing selection which includes dozens of hats, shirts, suits, pants, shoes, and other accessories. The fact that almost all of the clothing require ‘points' which must be purchased with real cash is however quite frustrating. The currency earned by actually dancing, called score, is virtually useless, moreso because every player start with 1,000,000 of it. Another consequence of the current version is the limited number of songs but that shouldn't be too difficult to expand as the game approaches official release.
Copy Cat!
All the social aspects and maps to explore are important fluff but the main draw of 5Street is the dancing. In this respect 5Street does not deviate much from the norm. There are several dance modes (Battle, Single, Team, Lover) but alls hare the same game play. Players must hit the correct arrow keys in time, then hit the space bar when the slider is over the glowing part of the bar. 5Street does an awful job at explaining these instructions but it shouldn't take long to figure them out. As you level, new special moves will become available which allow you to earn many more points but are more difficult to preform (more arrow keys must be punched in.) Using these special combos requires vitality (HP) which is gained by either resting or preforming regular dance moves. This is almost the exact same siystem as found in AUdition Online.
Each to their own
Your enjoyment of 5Street will inevitably be linked to your appetite for rhythmic games. I find games like this useful when introducing PC gaming to non-gamers but they don't have much lasting appeal. As a social MMO, 5Street doesn't have much solo content and its boring to dance with strangers so playing with friends is the best way to go. Quests and daily Events run by the GMs add some excitement but again it comes down to whether or not you enjoy arrow key timing games. With that said, 5Street is the best game of its genre, and certainly worth a try.
