Review
“Atlantica Online” is a new MMORPG developed by NDOORS. Unlike other MMORPGs, “Atlantica” is turn-based, and players control a party composed of their hero and NPC mercenaries. Combat is performed like a console RPG, with opposing sides taking turns performing their actions, which include basic attacks, usage of skills, usage of items, guarding, and retreating.
Players can select from one of 9 classes when starting out, and mercenaries of all class types can also be recruited, with the exception of the two newest classes, musician and power saw. Players will be better than mercenaries, however, as they have access to special player-only skills.
The game takes place on an alternate earth, and various timelines intertwine, forcing historical, mythological, and legendary figures to co-exist. Players will journey in locations as different as feudal Japan and 20th century Detroit, and battle through dungeons along the way.
Guilds are an important aspect of the game, as they control the persistent world. Player guilds can own towns, declare war, and complete quests to increase their notoriety.
“Atlantica” is free-to-play with optional premium content. Players can enjoy the game for free, but premium content will allow for quicker leveling, easier access to unique mercenaries and equipment, and items such as special mounts.
Years from now when free-to-play MMOs are the norm, and after dozens of Western developers have entered the arena, two games will be largely responsible for the paradigm shift that made it all happen: Frogster’s “Runes of Magic,” and NDOORS’s “Atlantica Online.”
“Atlantica” is, arguably, the first high-quality free-to-play MMO. Were there good ones before it? Yes, but before “Atlantica,” free-to-play almost always meant sub-par compared to retail titles; and if you didn’t pay, you were at a distinct disadvantage, or limited in some way. “Atlantica,” though, changed that. Instead of being “Lineage Clone #10923,” “Atlantica” broke the mold, mixing the tactical strategy and MMORPG genres in a new, “Final Fantasy Tactics”-like game.
Players start off by creating their character, choosing from a wide variety of classes. Classes include things you’d expect—like swordsman and archer—and things you wouldn’t—like musician, power saw, and cannon. Each class excels at a specific area, making the strategy for each entirely unique. For example, the swordsman class specializes in one on one physical combat. Meanwhile, the gunner specializes in ranged combat vs multiple foes, and can attack three enemies in a single line. Many classes have different areas and methods of attack; some attack in columns, some attack horizontal rows, some attack single targets, and others do splash damage around a target.
But what makes “Atlantica” so unique is that, even though you have your main character, you can still play with the other classes. Your hero, unlike other games, is never alone; you take with you a team of mercenaries. These mercenaries are only slightly worse than a player class of the same type (players will get a player-only skill for each), and they use the same equipment. What that means is that, not only do you always have multiple classes to use, but you also have a use for all sorts of gear. Get melee armor and have an archer? No worries, give it to your melee mercenary.
Starting out, mercenaries are generic, and named after the class they represent. As you and they level up, though, they can upgrade, you can recruit better ones, and eventually you can even recruit hero units. Most of these heroes will be names readily familiar to anyone playing. Want to have a party with Pocahontas and Napoleon? In “Atlantica” you can.
Since it’s a tactical RPG, combat is different than what most would be used to when playing MMORPGs. Instead of being realtime with timed attacks, the game takes turns between attacking and defending parties. Your units will all get action points, and performing skills, spells, attacks, and moving will require a certain amount. Each turn also is limited by a timer, which increases as you become more familiar with your foe via your bestiary knowledge. This means that, even though the game is turn-based, battles are very hectic as you have only seconds to pull off your moves, and you’ll have to plan strategies and your method of attack constantly, so that you don’t waste precious seconds deciding what to do next.
Another big element of “Atlantica” is crafting. There are dozens of crafting schools available; everything from pants to paper. To craft, you need to acquire the materials needed (after learning the skill from a guildmate or NPC), and then put them together. Rather than sit around waiting for a bar to move, you complete the items by gathering crafting points through battles. So, even if you’re crafting hundreds of healing potions, to craft them you’ll need to beat stuff up.
Guilds also play a big role in the game, as you can share crafting exp with your guild, control towns, and more. Towns also have guild quests available, and completing them will help increase your guild’s notoriety.
In a lot of ways, “Atlantica” is familiar. You have quests, a linear progression of areas to visit and monsters to kill, regular upgrading of equipment, and new abilities unlocked at regular intervals. In other ways, though, it’s something entirely its own. People say this about a lot of games, and it’s usually an exaggeration, but in this case it’s true: there is no other game out there like this game. In a few years, though, you can bet there will be plenty of copies. So why not get in on the original while it’s still largely unknown?

Easily oneof the best games ever made, and easily the worst company ever to make one as far as killing it quickly..lol The game was awesome beyyond compare until the company began a severe nerf canpaign to force item mall usage. All ways of making in-game gold have been gutted and nerfed. High level content (100+) requires alot of item mall usage to compete or even play for many. Unfortunatly the company behind it has gotten very greedy and the game has suffered massive playerbase loss. It can still be fun as long as you understand that and are happy with just staying at the mid-range levels and care nothing for the higher level content. For many that is enough and it can be fun if you can find other things to do than progress at a reasonable rate.

gameplay is great, but the social interaction is awful. But the most irritating is the game patch size. It can reach 500 megs or more every patch. I ended up spending time downloading patch than actually play the game.

Ok, Ok, That's right, it's the best game I played before, someone ppl told here the graphics are poor and it does not truth because if any game is better than atlantina graphics nobody will play it cuz' i dont think all the ppl have too much request that it wil need to play. I like collect the monters cards, and take off users in pvp,and pve is very good too... you have to take account that this game was beta a year ago only and the staff is always trying to fix all the recently buggs. And to finish and not less important is we must not pay for it XD Bye bye

i love strategy games! they should make more games like this!...and atleast this game doesnt require panic buttons and button bashing when fighting

Great game really. Lots of things to do, experience new builds by recruiting mercenaries and add them to your team, playing with the market to make gold, grind, pvp tournament (free league) every 1 or 2 hours (can't remember), lots of quests, upgrading your equippment, dungeon instances with clan/mates.. etc But some flaws imo : - At higher lvls (90/100) the difficulty jumps from "normal" to "omgwtfnightmare" so if u dont have pro stuff/items (cash shop ftw..) get ready to be owned hard.. - People tend to play more like its a solo console RPG, the social interface just sucks. But its a pretty good game. nice graphics & gameplay.

it's only 2-3 stars because not all gamers love to play STRATEGY TURN BASED GAME. ...i myself stop playing because of it.

"Players can select from one of 9 classes when starting out, and mercenaries of all class types can also be recruited, with the exception of the two newest classes, musician and power saw." The Musician class is now acquireable, it's called the "Minstrel". There are also numerous new classes since this was announced, such as the Junior Hwarang, a powerful bowman. The "Power Saw" class is called the Maniac, and may be added in the future.

i have to admit this game is jut amazing, you have an older crowd so there really isnt any issue with immaturity, you have many people that are very friendly, and they are also quiet so dont start stuff with them. Graphics rock, the music is really cool, the turn based fighting reminds me of final fantasy, you can use magic or just plain attack, amazing gam eplay it
unknown_her0, on September 28th 2009 11:48 pm
I get this feeling that votebot attacks are whats causing the poor ratings, not just this for this game but some others as well. The people doing this have way too much time on their hands.
Chainy, on September 17th 2009 11:29 am
The best mmo I have ever played
Koha23, on September 12th 2009 11:03 pm
Those are user ratings, not official scores. Used to say that on the old site, but it doesn't now. You can tell they're user ratings though because you can click stars to pick your vote.
Trevor, on September 11th 2009 05:05 pm
How does this game merit 2.5 stars in your review process. This is an excellent title period and not just a f2p title.
fall0ut, on September 11th 2009 01:04 pm
This game is the best MMO I have ever played. Period. Play it.
Play it, on September 9th 2009 02:25 pm
This game is great. It keeps you hooked with different activities that you switch between every few hours. It has an excellent, in-depth PvP system. Quests are also plentiful. But at lvl 95+ there's a really long grind: it will take about 10 hours to go from 99-100. Also the end game content is mostly made out of grind and repetitive dungeons. But almost all F2P MMOs are like this, so that's no big deal. However, unlike other Korean MMOs, there are other non-combat activities that are as rewarding as PvE combat, such in this case is PvP and enhancing equipment. I've played this game for 31 days worth of actual play time (the game records it for you) and I'm still hooked.
Exaflare of Sikyon, on September 4th 2009 06:46 pm
everything its like a 100 percent game
kevin, on September 4th 2009 05:20 am
I think this game is one of the best i've played for a while, The battle system will keep you hooked as it makes each battle intresting, Its not the old left click till dead move onto the next one its more engaging and tactical then that, Crafting is great, The fact you have to fight to craft makes it good so you can level up your chars and level up your crafting at the same time. Running around isnt a big issue as people think, If i need to run somewhere i put auto-run on and then open my inventory and start opening boxes, and if i have none to open i alt tab for 5 mins check some forums alt tab back in and im there no harm done. PvP is great, The division system keeps it fair, Guild and Town control is done really well, Yet to try out any of the end content as im approaching level 35 after 2 days of being addicted, Try this game if your looking for something new and intresting, Mabye you have tried most if not all Free to play MMO's out there, I'd give this one a try.

I think the game is fun but can get a little boring, but I'll still play it. I like the game(for now that is) and I have no clue why the rating dropped from top ten, to 2.5 stars, I mean really?do people just not like this game anymore??it's alot freaking better than runescape and though it may be repitive you can do other things for a while then come back to this game like I did, Seriously do some of you people have no lifes at all and can't find anything to do????????
guywithhair, on August 30th 2009 05:11 pm

This game is great, the COMBAT NEVER GETS OLD! Too bad I had to uninstall it because it took too much space on my comp. The community is very mature but also very quiet so don't expect any chatty parties. :O
ChocolateZipper, on August 29th 2009 04:53 pm
good lord, you can read comments about a ton of games and people say "BEST GAME I EVER PLAYED!!!!"....The game was fun for a while...i got to like lvl 60+ cant remember...then it just became plain repetitive, pvp is just ok, once you figure out the strategies and such, it comes down more to scrolls and luck(who misses more) which is fail imo...it was complete fail to have a match in the bag just to have a random scroll come up and turn the tide in the other players favor...all in all pve can be fun in groups against difficult groups of mobs...but that was about it I give the game a like 6/10...even with its fail large luck factor pvp, and repetivie pve (all f2p mmo's) its still a little better than most f2p's cause they usually all fail hard compared to mainstream games.
Cliffg, on August 28th 2009 03:32 pm
For some reason they lowered the score. I'm guessing there going to rescore it after they see whats in the newest patch. This game is so unique and without a doubt worth trying.
AK, on August 23rd 2009 11:05 pm
I think is game is fantastic. Speaking as a previous WOW player, this game is top of the line (and you really can't get any better when it comes to free MMORPGs). The graphics are amazing, the turn base system is ingenious, and the community there is far better than any other MMORPG I've played. I think my ONLY con would be the lack of customization, as quite a few level peers look alike. Other than that, I think this game has all others beat (come on - I left WOW to play this game)!

When I first started playing this game it took my breath away. Great class system and the turn based strategy battles gave it a new flavor. It wasn't until I decided I wanted to start crafting that i realized the biggest pitfall to this game. For one, it's hard to track down certain NPC's who can help you with crafting if the NPC is always moving around (thus ur unable to auto-move there). And it's great they made an NPC to locate the craft NPC...but doesn't that sound a little redundant??? Anywho then I find out teleport licenses are hard to find unless u have cash. But i also have to bring up the fact that half the crap you buy on the item mall only gives you a CHANCE of getting the item you may need. And all the other stuff you get is pretty craptastic. Definately not worth the money. Plus you can't buy a permanet teleport license, which makes the game an uber long walking, extremely boring game. But the music was great at first until you hit europe... It was as if the developers started on Asia and did the best job they could and just got bored or didn't care about the rest of the world. The music just gets horribly annoying after Asia. Anywho the game started at a 9 when I started and about lvl 60 I couldn't handle it anymore. Graphics-Great, Battle System-Great, Music-Depends what your doing, PVP-Great,IN-Game Navigation-Average, Quests-Ridiculous, at times, Crafting-Pointless, Markets and Auctions-Average, Overall-Average
LouieLou, on August 19th 2009 01:13 am
i think this game is rubbish. the graphgics are poor and the music stinks
kaaskopie, on August 17th 2009 08:47 am

this game looks lime one of the best mmorg's out there
ryan, on August 1st 2009 02:16 pm
I agree with the review. The game is amazing and fun. There are some slow spots of grinding, but the graphics are terrific. This game would take my no. 1 spot if it weren't for it being a strategy rpg. That's not a bad statement. I absolutely love SRPGs, and this one with it's online capabilities will always be one of my favorites. But as I don't feel it's a standard MMORPG, No. 1 goes to Runes of Magic. But this game is the best MMOSRPG out there, and it's FREE!

Nice game, and fun. Not a lot of variety, tough (in music, enemies, and NPC), but that's regular in all the games nowdays. Refreshing, in one word. Play it, isn't going to desappoint you.
AtzumoKayami, on June 9th 2009 05:38 pm
Con: Can't make a Power Saw class until another character is level 100 Power Saw is just one cool class. It's just reserved for experienced players. Con: Grinding to get new equipment and crafting material No, I just buy them. I never grind. No need. Con: Non-guildmates tend to play like it's a single player RPG Most join guilds. There is a great party system. There are no drawbacks to being in a party, and you actually get extra Exp and Gold. Con: Lots of in-game running if you don't buy a teleport license You can get a teleport license easily. Also, you can teleport to other cities at any Travel Agency, which are found in cities.

Awesome game, it reminds me of Final Fantasy, I definitely recommend it.
Jackal, on May 23rd 2009 06:30 pm
Alright game, all games have grinds to some extent so no point in complaining about that. Community is decent, biggest pitfall is the lack of customization, when are game designers going to figure out how far originality in player base counts?

Its the best game ever and if you try to say its not then you should play it. unless you dont like turn based rpg. But thats very unique for an online game. I havent seen a turnbased mmo before with such great graphics. I dont know why people give it such bad rating (under 3 stars, it should be 5 stars). And its better then any other game, that's that PERIOD!
