Power. We all want it; we all strive to obtain it; but do we ever really get it? Governments do, that’s for sure. They don’t manage companies or websites like the rest of us; they manage towns, cities and countries. That’s real power. That’s the sort of power I’ve always wanted. But (and sorry for the dreadful Spider-Man cliché) with great power, comes great responsibility. Sure, they get to run a country, and Mayors get to run a town, but make one wrong move and they’ll never hear the end of it.

“We need more power!” The citizens will yell. “The garbage is piling up!” They’ll cry. “We don’t feel safe enough!” They’ll scream to the heavens. At least, they do in “City Empires,” an online text-based government simulation game. “City Empires”—similar to games like “Sim City” and “The Sims,” but without the pretty pictures—takes place in a world reborn. Set on Earth many years after the fall of bureaucracy, you have been given the title of Mayor, and charged with rebuilding civilisation, starting with a city.

You begin playing with $75,000, and are first asked to build Infrastructure as it (apparently) attracts civilians to your city. If I had known then what I do now (that civilians are little more that whining idiots that request more than they need, and never give me even a second’s peace) then I would have likely given up right there and then. But ignorant to the needs of people, I built them an Infrastructure, and in they came. Seconds later they were screaming at me from all angles. Power, Water, Garbage, Military, Recreation—they wanted it all, and I was the guy tasked with giving it to them.

Navigating the text-only screens was considerably easier than I had expected it might be, and after only a few minutes I had discovered that I could provide these things with the simple click of a mouse, and the brain-power of an African squirrel. A few clicks of the mouse later and I had settled the needs of the people, and was on my way to glory and riches, and power unknown. Then I saw my income. $8,000 a day. “What!?” I cried to the heavens, like my citizens before me. “I just spent $70,000!”

“What to do… what to do.” I thought, as I stared at the city management screen. “I know! I’ll raise the taxes!” Up went the taxes, and down went my income. People were leaving, it seemed. And then in an instant, it was clear what I must do. Wait, wait, and wait—and then build more infrastructure. Then more people would come, and they would give me more money. And I would give them more power, and water, and tanks, and men with guns, and all would be well.

It worked, as I imagined it would, and before long I was the proud owner of a city; and after some time a country (guild) too. But really, what’s the point? There isn’t one, as far as I can tell. The entire game is a series of pointless clicking, enraging whining, and with little to no benefit whatsoever. In total, there were 59 other players online at the same time as me and I finally decided that I had had enough.

It’s free, it’s simple, and if you’ve always wanted to run your own city it might just be the game for you. Otherwise, steer clear of this one. There isn’t really much to see.

I was a long time player of this game, but quit when it became clear that the admin of the game was skewing the entire game for his friends. Anyone who complained--even in private via private messages to other people--was banned for it, and the admin has set up cities who can't be defeated to beat down and break up countries/alliances who are against his buddies. I love how this game was(past tense) set up, but the admin and his buddies ruined it.
