Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited
"DDO Unlimited" used to be "Dungeons & Dragons Online," until Turbine made it free-to-play.
Of the free-to-play games, it's one of the highest quality titles. It has instanced dungeons, and plays exactly like you'd expect a "D&D" game to play.
Gameplay is based on teams working together, and there are lots of unique aspects like traps to avoid, and bosses to beat. If you ever played "D&D" or "D&D" based PC RPGs, but passed on this because you didn't want to buy it and pay the monthly fee, there's absolutely no excuse now; you need to play this game, and the sooner the better.

Cool game. Misleading advertising - you can only do so much for free then its pay pay pay pay. I'd rather be told up front instead of being tricked, getting into a game then SURPRISE you need to pay. Also, enough of this monthly payment, even modules is a ripoff.. people are getting so bloody greedy. I'll pay once, but this reoccurring payment nonsense is typical greedy attitudes.

I heard this game was good. It also related to the real dungeons and dragons. However, most parts of the game require payment is what i also heard.

great game, i like the quest cos their dungeons and it can be really fun if you team up with other guys. and besides you can earn those turbine coins by doing some quests. It give the rogue most of the fun because you can open locked doors and disable traps in my opnion. Good game

do you want to know how hard it is to find the leveling up sigil? Well, 'bout as hard as opening up that can of friskies to feed your cat. I really am being honest, they made it basically impossible to miss, so don't worry 'bout the making it past level four without any money part, just not gonna happen.

I've been looking for a new game to try. I used to play tabletop D&D, so I think I'll give this a shot.

This game has been totally revamped. The camera and movement keys were horrible, with little 'remapping' options. Now, you can remap things to a more 'traditional' movement and camera system. This helps makes the game feel more fluid. You can also move all the bars and objects around setting it up as you wish. That said, the default setup is bizarre; an experienced MMO gamer will have to spend about 10 minutes resetting everything. This has always been my complaint about Turbine, they do not actually play other MMOs so are clueless as to what the actual standard IS, in the market place. At least they have added functionality this time though. I will say, for a D&D game, this is pretty deep and really its just a PnP D&D game but given new life by this microtransaction system. The game is completely free, but there are leveling restrictions. For example, you cannot progress past level 4 in the game as a FREE player unless you 'find' from a rare drop a 'sigil of leveling'. Your other recourse is to buy it from the store, which might cost you $5. Still, given the choice of paying $14.99 or $5, obviously the latter option is still viable. The quests are somewhat repetitive, but on harder settings (you choose how hard you want the instance to be before entering) can lead to some interesting decisions. I keep on going back for more, having often repeated the same instance 4 or 5 times simply due to good loot grinding and decent XP. When I first started playing DDO Unlimited, some 4hrs after its release, there were maybe 20 people in the starter zone. The next day, I saw over 100 people online in the same starter area (Korthos). I am fairly stunned at the amount of people playing this game, its nice to see. The banter is fun in general chat, with alot of people pleasantly surprised at how fun the gameplay is. This I think, is a good building pattern for a strong community (somewhat lacking I guess when it was a Subscription based game). There are a ton of classes to choose from, but you are limited to 2 character slots as a FREE player. You can unlock more by buying them from the store (again, somewhere around $5). You can also earn store points by generating 'favour' with factions simply by questing in the game (takes a while though). The graphics are really nice, with high AA, smooth animations, detailed textures and vibrant fully roamable wilderness environments and a boatload of dungeons to go into. Korthos, the starter area, has 5 which you can keep repeating until you are ready to head off to the next area. They have removed most of the restrictions for multiclassing, so if you want your Paladin to have some Rogue abilities then there is no penalty to doing so though there are still some armor restrictions in certain situations. The DROW race is unlockable or you can buy it from the DDO store, likewise the Warforged class is also unlockable and/or purchasable. Overall, since there are a high number of players now, fun instances, lots of groups going off to kill stuff, a boatload of soloable content (if you build your character properly, you can solo even ELITE content but you might have to wait a few levels before you can tackle it), the deepness of the D&D system coming to life with strong graphics and sound; overall I would have to give the new DDO a 9/10. I wonder why there are no character portraits though, for your own character. Every single object including other players has a portrait but when you look at your own UI you don't have one, its just a health bar. So thats a bit of a letdown. Little things need improvement, for example, cloaks are non-cosmetic and there is no way to show them when you equip them. Likewise eyewear, is also just invisible even though they add to your stats. I think a little more work in this area would clean up some of this. Perhaps we will see them add this content in the future. I also think the 'noobie' tutorial needs to be reworked. There are a ton of questions in the general chat channel about how to do basic functions. The ingame tutorial doesn't really explain alot of stuff. Sure you can look it up, but one key component to making people ease into an MMO is showing them the basics of the game in a detailed and fun manner. For example, alot of people do not know how to remove their helm from showing (/showhelmoff) or the fact they can do it by a /command nor do alot of people know how to trade with another player, or leave a group they were invited too. Again, there is basic function here, that needs to be properly built into a more friendly tutorial for new players. It should not be necessary for someone to ask in the general channel basic function about a game they just started playing and /commands should be taken out of the game completely incorporated into the UI as no one really likes to do /commands given the MMO market place tends to side on what is easiest to do (clicking is thus easier than typing /commands). That said, I think they need to work on the newbie tutorial a bit more but most of this stuff you can figure out while gaming or are smart enough to ask the right person.

Better than WOW, epic storyline, its just awesome.

I played it for a short while. The F2P signs all over it are misleading like what dragonlyre said. Granted DnD in rl you'd buy content but F2P hints more than the first few levels if your lucky But what i played i bloody well enjoyed greatly. the combat system and character development is fantastic

You can go all the way up to Level 20. But you hit minor roadblocks at 4, 9, and 14. You can either buy "sigils" that let you unlock the next levels or you can run quests to try and one as loot. Once you get to around level 9 you will need to start thinking about buying some 'adventure packs' to help you level faster.
Dragonlyre, on September 9th 2009 11:56 am
cn u explain more on the free system like is it for a certain lvl or not??? thx
looks good, on September 2nd 2009 12:56 am
Played the CB for this. I never tried DDO prior, but I have to say, once you get used to the controls it was rather nice. It is true that you will never have to pay for content, but once you hit around 9 or so, you are going to want to, due to the fact you can't get the levels you need on redoing the same content. But the packs run about $4-5 for each and you could almost hit a level or 2 through them.
Dragonlyre, on August 28th 2009 03:34 pm
Ohh my! I played the DDO trial and the only reason I didn't pay for it was cos the quest that should have taken me out of the tutorial island glitched. I will be trying this out!
