Review

“Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online,” or “MegaTen,” is a sci-fi themed MMORPG set in post-Apocalypse Tokyo, where survivors act as “Demon Busters.” As a rookie, the tutorial takes you to train near the city, learning the ropes, before being issued a full demon buster license.

After the tutorial, three pillars appear in the Tokyo area. The pillars bring the re-summoned demon presence. From your new base (Shinjuku Babel) you fight trying to retake and restore Tokyo from the demons.

The game plays pretty much like every other MMORPG on the market with both WASD movement, and also the click the ground movement. Some controls take a little time to get the hang of it. Thankfully, the game’s Wiki provides a keyboard map jpeg which helps learning the controls much faster.

Character development is level-based for attributes, but everything else is skill-based, meaning the more you use a skill the better you get at it. So technically, you could have very high level weapons skill at a lower character level. It makes for some interesting character builds.

Another interesting thing about “MegaTen” is the fact that anyone can handle pets. To do this you negotiate with demons and befriend them. Once you get friendly with a demon, they will fight with you. If you’re successful, you gain control of them through your data pad on your character’s wrist and can call them when ever needed.

During combat I found it hard to keep the camera on the action if the demon moved a lot. It was especially hard when fighting group mobs while using your pet as crowd control. Once again that could be just part of the learning curve, but it seemed quite difficult sometimes.

Learning shouldn’t be too hard, though, because “Mega Ten” has an active community, and the community is more than willing to help with just about anything. The starter area had many people so finding some at you level range is very easy.

Sadly, the overall graphical quality of the game is quite dated. The max resolution is 1280x1024; it reminds me of older “Persona 3” made for the “PlayStation 2” system. There is a lack graphics option and settings in-game. The plus is the game should run well at max or near max settings on a lower range machine.

Character animations themselves are rough. The models themselves are nicely done and look great in game. The model textures make up for some of the lack of smooth animations.

Music is very repetitive and quite boring. There a couple tracks that run all the time in the background except in combat, when it switches to some faster paced music. I found myself wanting to turn it off within a couple hours of playing. I found not turning the music off but turning it down from the options menu was the way to go.

Sounds are about the same as the music. The same sounds for magic and melee are quite repetitive. This is something that most MMO games are guilty of today. Being a skill-based game that is a problem, however, because you will want to use the same skill a lot. For a reward, you get to hear the same sound a lot, too!

Camera control and the lack of graphics options are the top of the list of issues found in-game. Other than that for the most part “Mega Ten” is a solid game. The issues that I’ve come up with can be over looked. Game play is fun, even with dated graphics, and the community is great, they are more than happy to help the new demon busters.

Its definitely a game worth playing, It has alot more elements of strategy in combat than most of mmorpgs, the setting is definitely refreshing...although it does remind me of PSO/PSU slightly. The demon system as a whole is awesome and it definitely helps with solo play, for example I'm a gunner/mage and my demon is melee based so he can tank for me. Finally I have to mention how awesome the expertise system is, it allows you to completely customise your characters skill build as you select different categories to increase as you earn exp from using related skills. All in all I think its definitely worth a try!

Love it! My only complain is there are not enough campaign acts; once most people finish all the acts there is little insentive to keep playing other than level up for no reason other than to get more demons fused. New areas and a high level campaign would be a "G_D send and desperately needed. suggestion; Aeria should reward players with free AP for every 10 levels above 40. Fortunately the game is still being developed and new content including new demons and items are added periodically. There are also events, some very lame, some very simple, some frustrating and some of them fun. It is worth trying, the game translated very well from the console world into PC realm, and it's free, so no one should complain in the end. Better than Final Fantasy online, IMO.

the game was cool but got tiring due to how fast ur guy walks. i mean my grandma can walk faster than ur guy can run and all the fedex missions make it even worse.

The game is actually a lot easier than the review makes it sound. While you may get lost at first, after finding the pixie with a title, a person with average intelligence can find anything they need. Combat is easy if you know what you're doing. With melee combat, you just watch the enemy to know what they're doing/going to do, and act accordingly. Doing so can keep you alive against a boss several times your level (though being an idiot will reward you will a quick but painful death). The sound may be boring, but who owns a computer and doesn't have access to their favorite music?

i see that you count PvP as a pro in other cases, why not put it here? once you hit level 30, your allowed to PvP 'till the cerburous' come home.

"Confusing environment, easy to get lost" Lolwhat, the world in SMT imagine is extremly simple, maybe event too simple, if you can get lost in this then stay away from RPGs that actually have big worlds.

Great game, loved the story, loved that u could use literally use all the demons the game has to offer, it shows difference between players and i mean u can choose what play still u want ur demon to use, lots of fun. The only downside to it is the quest line. the main quest are unbelievably interesting and unique A+ to that no doubt, but the only thing right now is once ur done with that main quest it is hard to know who gives other quest as u dont have a symbol showing u the available quest. And be ready for the grind, it is quite painful. Good game i give it a 3.5/5.
