Review

Since its initial Chinese release four years ago, "Perfect World" sought to become the Next Big Thing in free-to-play MMOs. While it never quite reached the top, it has become quite a popular game. Even a few American and UK players got in on the action with versions like the Malaysian one; even if it was riddled with translation snafus. Thankfully, last Fall "Perfect World International" was released. The preferred (and official) English version of the game, "International" is the same game English-speaking players came to love, but without the awful translation.

Compared to other Asian MMORPGs, "Perfect World" is definitely in the upper tier production-wise. The game looks great, runs great, and plays great compared to many of the clones on the market. Even when run on a fairly lower end mid-class system, the game rarely lagged even in the most populated of areas.

The game features three races, with two distinct classes composing each. No two classes are really that similar to one another, and given the distinct race-requirements to play them there is a lot of variety in terms of what – and who – you'll see running around. Of course, that also means that the more popular classes are in abundance. To make it more bearable, "Perfect World" features very detailed character customization. Hair, ears, nose, breast size, and more can all be tweaked, resulting in characters that look similar, but different enough to appear unique.

Like most MMORPGs, "Perfect World" features combat centered on auto attacks and hotkeys. Unlike many, though, the fighting is fast and frequent. As you level up, you'll find yourself thrust into battle after battle, relying on potions and spells to keep you alive and swinging.

The first 20-25 levels of "Perfect World" are a blast, as quests quickly level you up, each class is distinct, and the monsters and areas you encounter are a step above almost all free-to-play titles on the market. Unfortunately, after that point the game enters stereotypical "Asian grindfest" mode, and leveling becomes a slower process. Since many free-to-play titles often involve copious amounts of grinding, it's not a huge blow to the game; what's unfortunate is how, early on, the game seems to break free from the grinding mold, only to later fall back on it.

One way that the game does set itself apart, though, is with the level of detail and oftentimes boggling degree of difficulty. In an age where "WoW" made it popular to be simple, "Perfect World" defies the conventions, and if you aren't careful and reading all of the text in the beginning quests, you're going to become lost very, very easily. Leveling also takes a more complicated route, following in the footsteps of "Diablo" and other games by allowing you to increase skills via skill trees. So you may be the same class as your friend, but your characters may be completely different playing experiences.

Recently, the game has launched its first official expansion, "Perfect World: The Lost Empire." This expansion adds new skills, areas, equipment, and quests. For the most part, this new content is for higher-leveled characters, and it helps freshen things up a bit. There aren't any new classes or races, but the new areas to explore, skills to unlock, and equipment to find should give all new and returning players plenty to do.

If you're a veteran of free-to-play MMORPGs and are used to the grind associated with most of the titles, then "Perfect World" is the perfect game for you. It may turn into a grindfest, but it's in the top percentile of the grinding games. And, if you hate grinding, the first 20-25 levels of the game are filled with quests and rarely slow. So, at the very least, you'll get a couple weeks of playing time for free. Who knows, you may even come to love it enough to put up with the grind in order to progress your character in the game's world.

First impression: Ooooh So prettty! :O At Level 72: ...3million to hit 73?... Well Ill quest. . . .No quests available? Okay I'll Grind! . . . 3hours later. 20% in: Fml. I died? Okay thats fine- Wait 15%? I was at 20%!! Has anyone mentioned when you die you lose your exp? Yea. Not fun. I quit after spending month on one level because everytime i died id lose my hard work. If you're realllllllllllllly patient go for it. Otherwise, don't expect to last long. Pretty wears off after random PK'ers farm you.

Actually it just deserves a 2 rating. This game is only good for cash shoppers, anyone who says PWI is the best MMORPG ever is lying and doesn't know what the hell they're talking about.

"PERFECT WORLD IS AWESOME AND DESERVES A BETTER RATING" ...because some people, like YOU, either spend your entire paychecks on the game or, use mommy and daddy's credit card to 'enjoy the game more'. The game is a 'jack of all trades, master of none' and doesn't deserve a higher-rating due to the fact it tried to mimic every 'good' MMORPG out there, but failed...miserably. If we could separate the cash-shop zealots from the casual "I work for a living and pay my bills" crowd in chat and the game (separate servers?) this game would have potential. Otherwise, it's merely: "Free to play, pay to win!" BTW? I have seen people 'grind' LESS on a skateboard.

Oh, and one last thing. Dont bother with reading Drusilla's review. Going to lvl 18 isnt near enough time to really get a good grasp of PW. You can reach the low 30s in 1-2 days. Trust me on that, Ive done it.

Dosinn, of Dreamweaver server, HDT guild, on September 30th 2009 05:13 pm

Perfect World is a truly awesome game. Ive a lvl 73 warrior (called a blademaster ingame), and Ive been playing the game since last September. (Note: Ive created multiple characters, and this latest one has taken from mid June to about a week or two ago to reach lvl 73) Pros: Classes- There isnt a "useless" class in PW. Every class has a role to play in dungeons/questing/etc. It all boils down to a players skill with their char. Character Creation- You will rarely, if ever, see the exact same 2 characters in the game. The char creation options are on par with a P2P or non-online RPG, like Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. Size of the arms, legs, wait, torso, bust, even head are totally up to the player. Haircut, facial features, even the way your ears look can be changed. Skin color, hair color, lips, and eye color can be set to just about whatever color you want. Population- PW has 5 separate servers, 2 for pvp, 3 for pve, with a pvp mode for the 3 pve servers. Hit up any of the main cities during play, and youll see anywhere from several hundred to several thousand ppl, depending on the server, and time of day. Translations- Translations are superb. You will rarely see a poorly translated piece of text in the game, and those bits that are messed up, get fixed rather quickly, taking anywhere from a few hours, up to the next weekly update. Updates- PW updates every week. Yes, I did say Every week. Most of the time, updates are for bugs, and localization fixes. Those are usually done without taking down the servers. However, usually at least once a month, PW does a content update of some type, ranging from stuff in the boutique, like HP/MP charms, clothes, mounts (both ground and air mounts) to stuff like new quests, updated quests, and other things. Variety- Each class has multiple weapons and armors that they can wear/use. For example, the blademasters, the human warriors, have 4 different weapon paths they can follow after lvl 29. But each class has at least 3 different weapons that they can use, with each weapon having diffent abilities. Same goes for armors. The 3 armor types are heavy, light, and robes. Provided you set up your stat points the right way, you can wear any armor type you want, or multiple armor types. Leveling Up- There are enough quests at lower lvls to pretty much guarantee that you wont have to grind any in order to lvl up. There are 3 big points in which the number of quests drop off pretty sharply: lvls 30-40, lvls 60-70, and lvls 80 and beyond. At these points, you'll have to grind in some form or fashion in order to lvl up, but even then, there are options to avoid this. At lvl 30, you start getting a quest called Crazy Stones, which gives you a set amount of exp/spirit every day, and at lvl 40, you start getting bounty hunter quests, which also gives you a set amount of exp/spirit upon completion. There are also items which give you quests you can complete for exp/spirit. Skill Progression- Skills are unique for every class, and there are enough of them to satisfy pretty much any play style. Cons: Skill Progression- I know, I ended the Pros with skills, and it seems a good place to start with as far as cons are concerned. Low level skills quickly become useless for some classes, and upper lvl skills are rather exspensive to gain or lvl up, costing 150k or more in coin, and 80k or more in spirit, which you gain from questing/grinding. Traveling- Run speeds in this game are fairly slow, especially for wizards and clerics, which are the slowest characters in the game. The free aerial mounts you get at lvl 30 arent much faster than just running. In order to get a faster aero (flying mounts are called aerocrafts ingame) or a land mount, youll have to pony up a fair amount of real money, or rather large sums of ingame coin. The fastest ground mounts or aeros cost anywhere from $20-50, US, or anywhere from 2-5 million ingame coin. But the expsense is usually worth it in the end, as you can transfer these items between characters, or sell them to other players for ingame coin. Community- As with any MMORPG, the ppl who play the game range from 11-12 yr old students, up to 50 or 60 year old grandparents. Some ppl ingame will be nice and helpful, but a lot of ppl ingame are jerks and arseholes. Fortunately, there is a blacklist feature, so you wont see anything that person says. Cash Shop- As nice as it is, after a certain point in the game, youll either have to start paying real money for items from here, or buy these items from ppl for ingame coin, just to be able to continue lvling efficiently. HP/MP charms replenish your hp/mp once it drops to a certain percentage, and Guardian Angels keep you from losing exp when you die, or dropping items if you die while in PvP mode or a PvP server. HOWEVER, there is a silver lining to the cash shop. You can use ingame coin in order to purchase the currency for the cash shop, but doing this can cost you anywhere from 150k-550k+ for the cash shop gold, depending on what events, if any, are going on at the time. Updates- Whenever PW does a major update, they take ALL the servers offline. These down periods can last anywhere from 15-20 mins, to 2-3 hours, depending on the size of the update, though they usually leave the servers down for about 2 hours, in order to service them. So, once all is said and done, Perfect World International is a very good game, but not without its flaws. If you want a game where you can lvl up like crazy on your own, and get godly strong very fast, you're better off looking elsewhere. If you're looking for a game where you can pwn the noobs right off the bat, you would also be better served looking elsewhere. But if you're looking for a game where you can spend a nice chunk of time playing with friends, and meeting new people, give PW a shot. Chances are, you wont regret it. Personally, Id give PW a 9.5 out of 10.

Honestly, I love perfect world. Its one of the few games that you can play and never really "beat" so it's like an ongoing challenge. No one has really reached the level cap yet, so if you play a game just to beat it and get uber awesome quickly, then well this game isn't for you. But I see it as you can never stop improving. It's true leveling slows down. But, I think some people exaggerate this. There are many tricks to getting experience efficiently and quickly. I'm at level 63 and I can still grow a level or two in a weekend (Note that i do not play on weekdays) Its true that the game is very expensive especially skills (this still annoys me because, unlike armor and weapons, there is no way to resell your skills to get back money when your done or get bored with them.) but once you get to higher levels, making money becomes easier. (Note: Some classes are better at money making than others). Perfect World also has a pretty complex economy forcing you to either spend lots of money or be patient finding the right time or place to buy something you need and saving some good money. (just make sure when you hit that level when you can wear that new cool looking armor, to not go and just buy it from the first store you find it at.) Graphics are the best I've seen, period. The character customization and in game graphics really put me in awe. I think it really adds to the gaming experience. Music is nice, and when I get bored of it I just mute it and put on something I have on my computer. The game is also growing quickly as the international version only recently turned 1 year old. But perfect world forces you to "play the game." It's not an easy fun time to "pwn the noobs" until you get to higher levels. I also think the game gets more enjoyable once you hit higher levels. In my opinion levels 40-60 get to be a pain. 60-70 isn't much better but you get some cool skills, armor, and weapons. Really, in summary, this game is great for those who want a game to invest time and effort that won't just be beaten and become useless in a short period of time. It seems everlasting and new updates are very frequent, in my opinion, and I used to play runescape (probably one of the most popular online games out there) when I was younger.

People, would you stop either loving it or hating it and come up with a fair, pro's and cons outlook? Quests: At first I though these were pretty cool, becuase you'd get to meet new people and places and get rewards, but then they start getting very repetive, and let's face it, de ja vu just wasn't what it once was. Kill mobs, gather stuff... Also, it's a real drag to have to run for like, 15 minutes just to get somewhere, then talk to someone and run back. Rating: 4/10 Graphics: Now, I thought these grapics were really kick-ass. At first, they were just alright, but then I figured out what this funny little tab called options was for, and I turned them up all the way and may I submit a big awsomeness? Still, I thought the villages could have used a bit more. Rating: 9/10 Character Design and Class: As far as character design, definitly best I've ever seen. Every character you created was completly induvidual and unique. Also, you really could created a drop dead georgous char, which I must confess I like to do. For class, also fairly good. Although not as in-depth as some, it has some good classes (Elven, Untamed, etc..). Rating 8/10 Leveling and Experiance: Ughh...! So slow!!! At first it goes by pretty fast, but by the time your on your, what, even your 18th level, it takes FORVER! Not good at all. Rating: 2/10 Completly "Free": At first, you can get by alright, but once your at your 36th level, it can definitly slow you down without paying. Money also, can fly by. Items are very expensive. Still, you can play and level without paying, and the game itself is free, so kudos for that. Rating 4/10 Weapons and Armor: Hmmmm... Weapons are pretty good in this. They look cool, which I always love, and there is a pretty big variety; if you're willing to pay. At first you start out with basic sword, bow, etc.. But once you get to a higher level they can be very drag. When your about level 40 (See me in 30 years), you can go to outside sources besides the blacksmith to get your weapons, but until then, all the classes go to the same guy, to get the same weapons. Also, I think the armor's a little screwed. Okay, let's say you get a dragon warrior (Just an example, doens't really have dragon armor in PW) shirt thingy. It looks good, plus is powerful, but personally, I don't like that in order to have the same dragon warrior outfit you have to wait 6 more levels. Maybe it's just the 6th grade girl that I continuasly try to hide, the one who has a taste for the glamour, but still... Rating: 5/10 Interactions with players, enviorment: Interactions with player is okay. Very basic; Friends list, Guild, (Called a faction in this game)and you can even get married I think. But, the actuall interactions isn't that good. The kind of game I'd like to play, is one were you can go into the tavern and get an ale with someone while you chat. This doesn't have that. Interactions with the enviorment is pretty poor. You can't even go into buildings, which is really frusteration. You can run endless amounts of miles without ever needing a break (Although at first you have to break from flying a little, though you don't once your at level 8.) Oh, and me? I like to be able to sleep. That way, when you go back into the game, you can see your person climb out of bed and put your battle armor on. No no, says Perfect World. Rating: 3/10 Please don't think I'm slamming it. I loved it for a while, it was very addicting, but it can get very boring once you get to 16. I quit, and my char was only 18, I think. Worth playing, but only until they produce a more interactive game, were you do more that run and kill mobs.

Drusilla, on September 8th 2009 02:11 pm

The game is good but not without flaws. The Graphics and character customization are well ahead of any other F2P MMO but the game has a slow pace feel as characters will often find themselves walking/flying or riding a mount for a long time just so they can find some high level monsters to grind for the next few hours. While the game WILL feel very "perfect" first of all the music will become very annoying and the game will soon deteriorate to become a grinding feast due to it having one of the slowest levelling rates in MMO's. The game though is easily among the best of MMO's due to the players freedom of movement in jumping, flying stupendously high and swimming. Levelling is painfully slow and the quests are far and few giving little reward and even less gold. Everything in the game is priced stupendously high in a marketing tactic to force the player to spend real life money. This game is highly recommended towards a player who is willing to dedicate alot of his time to this game and only this game to the more casual gamer this will soon have little appeal and will the leave the gamer with a feeling of "wow that was pointless". Overall out of 10 the game gets an 8/10 the graphics beat almost every MMO and character customization is very detailed the skills are interesting but the games main failures are the extremely slow levelling speed, the high priced items within the game and the lack of interesting or rewarding quests.

Unbiased Opinion, on August 31st 2009 09:18 am

I loved this game, loved it so much i cancelled my WoW (b/c it gets boring after a while) to make some space to download PW. This is the 2nd time ive downloaded Perfect World b/c when i used to play as a lvl 44ish elf archer my computer had to have everything wiped. i used to play this nonstop, couldnt stop, would not stop..

ExPloIT, on July 20th 2009 02:38 am

Actually when you begin playing this game its pretty good actually. What I loved at first about it was the detailed character customization. I remember from other MMORPGs I've played in the past one of the things I hated was the crap character creations selections, but this game definitely excels when it comes to character creating choices. You can choose different hairstyles, colors, and shape their faces and body styles; its all very fun and can make every character in-game unique. In the beginning its very easy to level due to the large amount of quests and the low amount of experience required to level. But as you get up into the late 30s you begin to see that not many quests are available for you to complete and that you'll have to begin grinding to level. it gets very worse in the 40s where quests are very scare and you have to just grind. So this MMORPG is kinda like other normal ones where you just mostly grind to level your character which can get very annoying and boring very fast. Only some quests here and there which do not even give a lot of exp anymore to raise your exp bar by percent. up around the 70s and up it becomes increasingly annoying to level because you need over millions of exp to get your character to the next level. So basically the leveling is very slow and may take a lot of time unless your one of those people who has no life and can play and grind all day. The graphics in the game all set to high look beautiful, but after just 2 or 1 week of playing the music gets very annoying to the point where you just mute it and the sound effects suck and you would prefer muting those as well. This game offers an open chatting system where only choice inappropriate words or phrases are censored with ****. You can form parties and chat with the people in those parties or 'squads' in green colored chat. Or if your in a faction you can chat in faction blue chat. World chat which reaches everyone in the entire game online no matter where they are requires an item through the cash shop however to use. The classes for the game are nice though and is enough to create variety in the game. But as you level higher in the game you notice that its very hard to play Perfect World without spending a lot of real life money in the cash shop to trick out your character in very nice gear to continue playing. Basically it doesn't even matter how much skill you have in game play when it comes to this game. As long as your rich and can afford to + 5 refine most of your gear or fill your armor sockets with flawless/beautiful HP or physical defense gems. This gets really frustrating and eventually ended up pissing me off a lot. So if you really want to enjoy this game and play your character to a very high level then get ready to spend a lot of $$$. Obviously this game isn't actually 'free', it doesn't come close. But if you don't want to spend real $$$ but still want your character to be tricked out in very good and expensive gear you'd have to spend many hours and days of your time grinding or something to raise a lot of coins. In this game 5 million coins does not last long. To tell the truth when my character became high leveled I began to see that this game was not very good actually and began hating it. There are many flaws and unfairness to this game that I didn't like at all and annoyed me greatly. But I couldn't stop playing because I didn't want to give up on my level 80 cleric. But it became boring at that point because there wasn't much to do but grind, spend all your money, do two very annoying dailies where one is long and the other is expensive to do, or pk if you chose the pk server. The skill provided for every class are very nice and fun to use with your characters but the huge issue with that is every skill and skill level cost money. This is one thing that pissed me off a lot about the game. Everything was expensive enough but we had to pay coins AND spirit (which you gain from doing quests) just to learn them. When you become very high leveled the cost increases just to level 1 skill which becomes extremely annoying because you can become broke instantly. The flying system I didn't like really because in the first place only 1 race can fly in the beginning of the game. And the rest have to be level 30 to fly which annoyed me when I made my wizard after my cleric. And the flying isn't that fast even if you spend over 5$ in real money to buy 80 upgrades in the cash shop just to max it out only to 3.0 speed which is still very slow. All the free wings offered are slow and ugly but the pretty and faster ones you have to buy in the cash shop or spend over a million coins to buy them in game. Mounts are faster but you can't afk ride them because you may ride into an obstacle or accidentally run into a group of mobs or a boss and die. The fast ones are very expensive and the requite level to ride a certain mount varies. So the main point here is 'Perfect World International' isn't so perfect after all. But its an okay MMORPG to play I guess.

Tory , on July 14th 2009 02:27 pm

Quests are repetitive, graphics are worse than Cabal's, and yet somehow this stands out from other MMOs. This is quite the example of bandwagon gaming. See Gears of War and Halo for such examples.

I dunno about this particular serv., but in general PW is one of the best. I guess the only lack is game World ( lets say 70% of Lineage2 map ). Though I'm not MMO gamer, so I dunno for sure. But in all other features...its even more better. P.S: The only MMO I liked =.=
