RF Online is a mix of both Fantasy and Sci-Fi. The game takes place in the future where three factions (The Bellato, Cora, and Accretia) are fighting for control over resources in the universe. The game’s PvP system centers around RvR (Realm versus Realm) combat. The three factions in RF Online are constantly at war with each other, and the faction that is doing the best gains control of Crag Mine, where one can gather ore [Ores are used for crafting] at an incredible pace.

RF Online also has a unique political system, similar to Archlord, where players from each race compete to become the Ruler of each faction. The player with the most Contribution Points at the end of each week becomes the leader of his/her faction, and is expected to lead his faction to victory. The leader has the ability to speak to everyone in his faction at the same time and be able to understand the language of the other two factions. Aside from the RvR, RF Online functions like almost every other MMORPG. You start the game by choosing one of four distinct classes: warrior, ranger, spiritualist, or specialist. Each class has the ability to advance jobs upon reaching level 40, which adds an entirely new layer of player customization to the game.

RF Online is also fairly newbie-friendly, as the game has a tutorial that’ll teach you everything from moving the camera to fighting. MMORPG veterans will want to skip the tutorial, as it shows you how to do a lot basic things that you’ll be able to figure out on your own. The game also starts you off with 100 or so HP / Mana potions, which will allow you to minimize downtime as you level up and grow stronger, especially early game as you won’t be able to afford potions when you first start off.

RF Online also has a unique skill system that’s entirely separate from your character’s level. As you use skills and spells, they grow in strength, which will add countless additional hours to game play for users that want to master all their skills. The game’s buddy system and internal mail system will allow players to easily communicate and organize parties. Another incredible aspect of RF Online is the game’s economy. The game’s economy is entirely player run and even has inflation to act as a money sink in the economy. Inflation is calculated by the total expenditures on the server, the more spending there is, the higher the inflation. The in-game auction house is incredibly helpful and makes trading with other players much easier.

One of RF Online’s biggest drawbacks is the fact that the game is incredibly prone to crashing. The game crashed at least 4 times in a single hour while I played. Upon searching Google, I found out that the problem wasn’t an isolated incident, and other players suffer from the same problem. Combat is also a click fest, which is incredibly stupid. Why couldn’t the developers let me hold the left mouse button down, or simply click it once to fight, rather than having to click it every time I want my character to attack. The game also lacks moderation from game masters, as there are spammers advertising their power leveling services in game, hindering legitimate players from using the chat system. If you can look past RF Online’s instability, the game is definitely one of the best Sci-Fi MMORPGs on the market.
