Review
While not for everyone, browser games are a thriving source of MMO gaming across the globe – and when it comes to Browser Games, there is one that always comes to mind before any other – RuneScape. I knew that it was only a matter of time before I would join the legions of fans already experiencing all that RuneScape has to offer. Evidentally, that time has come.
Joining the Dark Side
Like most Browser Games, I began my journey into the unknown by simply creating an account. Soon after I was informed that my Java was not up to date, but with the handy use of links it wasn't long before I had Java installed, and was looking at a fully 3D, and quite impressive login screen. Character creation was next, and it was then that I began to notice why RuneScape was at the pinnacle of browser based gaming – it looked really, really good. Not good by today's standards of course – not even close really, but for a game running through my web browser, it was really quite amazing.
Learning the Ropes
I spent the next few minutes familiarizing myself with the interface and controls – and with the help of the handy tutorial guides found my way through the first part of RuneScape with great ease. Walking consisted of simply clicking whereever I would like to move, and interacting was done the same way – by simply clicking on an object or NPC to interact with them. The camera was controlled using the arrow keys, and I was aptly informed that if I needed any help, the website contained plenty of useful information for new players and to check it out if I had any trouble settling in. I didn't – but it was nice to know that it was there all the same.
A Simple Life
I was really quite surprised at just how in-depth the included tutorial was; as I progressed I learned the basics of making a fire by cutting trees, fishing and cooking my catch on said fire, and even how to mix flour and water together to make dough. I learned how to change the game music, use emotes, and even how to run and the imposed energy limitations of doing so. To be frank, it was the same as learning how to play any other MMO, and it felt really good.
Moving Forward
Continuing through the tutorial saw a staggering variety of different explanations – including everything from Quests and Spells – to mining and smelting different Ores to create weapons. I even had a small chat with my Financial Advisor at the bank to learn some different ways to make money, and was given the basic lowdown on combat, both ranged and melee. While nothing was especially extraordinary, everything was polished to a mirror sheen and very well constructed. By the time I teleported to the mainland to join everyone else I had a very decent understanding of the game mechanics, and felt confident that I could happily progree through without concern.
Hee-yah!
Combat and leveling works slightly different to the norm in RuneScape – as instead of the standard grinding – whereby players are able to use only the skills their class permits – RuneScape allows players to decide on the go. Players can only gain experience in a particular area by using the skills that define it – such as attacking with a sword to increase your skill with a sword, or cutting trees to get better at woodcutting. Taking it one step further, in combat players receive XP for each individual type of attack – so by choosing to Lunge you get better at lunging, and to get better at stabbing one must stab. It's a much older style of PRG advancement – but then – RuneScape is quite an old game, albeit with a new coat of paint.
VIP – Very Important Players
The remainder of RuneScape plays very much like the great many fantasy-themed MMOs of recent late – giving players the ability to learn and increase their skills, complete quests to progress the story, fight beasts, and in certain servers each other – everything you would expect from an MMO and more. Also much like other F2P MMOs, users that choose to pay the $5.95 purchase fee gain access to full accounts and the many benefits that come included with such a buy.
Members can expect to receive regular content updates, removal of in-game advertising, access to a world over three times the size of the original, the tools required to build their own homes, and even access to an entire new set of skills. It's a small price really, and it's no wonder so many people are paying it considering just how much there is to gain.
Books and Covers
There's an old saying that involves something about books and covers that serves as an important lesson with RuneScape. I had refused playing on several occasions purely because of its browser based nature – and was pleasantly surprised when I finally gave it the chance it deserved. It's not a game that I would regularly play – the F2P market is quite simply much to amazing at present for me to spend time playing a game that looks like it was developed in the 90's, browser based or not. But say I was at work, or at a friend's house, or visiting my grandparents for the summer – there are plenty of situations in which RuneScape could serve as the perfect escape – and should.
In addition, RuneScape employs many simple features that much more demanding games don't – features like cooking and fishing to make food and survive, features like creating your own weapons, even the inclusion of a hugely fleshed out tutorial to help players begin is something of a rarity in the MMO scene – and it impresses me to see RuneScape standing strong in it's browser format and setting the right example. As far as browser games go, RuneScape would receive a 5/5 from me on any day of the week – give this one a shot next time you have nothing else to play, you may just find yourself pleasantly surprised.

I have been playing Runescape since 2002 when it was only a year or two old since it released. I have beening playing the game ever since and I feel that Jagex has come the furthest than any MMO out there. I have tried other popular MMOs like Habbo, World of Warcraft and Age of Conan and I don't feel that any of them add up to Runescape. In Runescape you start off with a great introduction to the game without installing any disics. Most starting players can begin in less than 10 minutes. Also, you don't have to invest in any money and could play the game for free as long as you want. I never cared for World of Warcraft and besides the grpahics I don't see ho it is better. Jagex has done an excellent job on the game and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fun and enjoyable game to play. Overall Rating: 5/5 Grpahics: 3/5 Storyline: 5/5 Quests: 5/5 Regular updates: 4/5 Community: 4/5 Difficulty: 4/5

I've been playing RuneScape since late in 2005. While I can argue that other games have better graphics, often those detract from my personal gaming experience due to the fact that my (and most other) laptops have crappy graphics cards. I enjoy being able to play a 3d MMORPG with decent graphics, AWESOME game-play, and some pretty fun and intense quests (Yeah, I like quests, I have the cape to prove it :D). This truly is the best browser based game their is. 9/10.

I've been playing RuneScape for just about 3½ years by now, and I'm still having a great time whenever I login. Apart from the vast world to explore and the genuine quests, the fact that RuneScape receives regular content updates is really unique. While some gamers may not like RuneScape, the game has some advantages in accessibility and gameplay that no-one can deny.

Well, Runescape is the pinnacle of browser based games, and it's pretty good to start off a future MMO player, but when it comes down to it, the game isn't worth the $5.Infact, once you hit the plateau in leveling, Jagex should be paying you to play. Getting a single 99 takes many, many hours (hundreds, even) of mind-numbing grinding. The game itself seems flashy and amazing at first, but in the end, the PvP is click fights to see who runs out of food or potions first, and the skilling is literally click after click of monotonous tasking. Anyone who disagrees obviously does NOT know what a "fun" or "serious" game is, or has not yet invested the cash in better developed games, Ex. World of Warcraft. On the whole, the game deserves a 2/5. It's hard to take seriously after level 100.

After trying wow once and learning that its 180.00 Us a yr for us Canadians to pay for membership I told Blizzard to stuff it. And after 5 yrs playing Runescape I will stay with Mark and Andrew over Blizzard any day since it was Blizzard that got sued for stealing money from players real bank accts ( was on 60 min). Only reason Wow is on the map is because ppl create more than 10 accts, Wow has standard graphics that repeat its like watching a slid show. Runescape all the way because once they got the new servers up and running they are going graphic-happy taking it to a new outstanding level that no one has been to yet. SO for those that play Wow my sypathy its time to join up or come back to he greatest MMORPG ever created.

This game is soo old... but its actually a good game to play. It was the first mmorpg i ever played, and it really started me off well as a basis for more advanced, more serious gaming.

Um.. 20 dollars a year is cheaper then 5 a month. If runescape is 5 dollars a month, then you'd have to pay 60 dollars a year for it, triple the amount you pay on WoW

These days, the graphics are lagging behind other, newer games. Don't get me wrong, they're very well developed for a Java game, but there needs to be another advancement in graphics for Runescape to really compete. The learning curve is short and easy, yet a single 99 can take months and months of three or four hours of training to complete, IF you are members. Non members have very few good choices when it comes to training. Overall it is a fun game to start and a hard game to finish without serious $.

An extremely well balanced Game. Everyone starts out the same and everyone has the ability to be just as good as the next. You never need to re-roll a character.

I play this game it is actually a prity good game except for when u get to a hire level then u have to become a member of this game or it is impossible to grow to a hire level
Impala215, on May 26th 2009 11:22 am
its a really good game and if you played it in simpler times quit because of bad graphix and went to the cheap and cheesey world of warcraft, sell off all your world of warcraft gear and buy runescape members, because consider this, runescape members cost 5$ a month, while WoW, costs about 20$ a year, you will probibly save money by playing runescape
