Review

Seafight is a pirate-themed, browser-based MMO. There are two components to the game; the web page itself and the client that opens in a new window where all your sailing and fighting are done. The website acts as a sort of 'port' where players accept new quests at the Pub, buy new items or ships, and so on. The maximum level in Seafight is 10, with each level gained giving you access to more zones. During the first few levels players will mostly complete quests and fight NPC monsters & pirates, but as they get to the higher-level areas with open PvP, working together becomes essential for survival. Account creation in Seafight is a simple process. Thankfully, new accounts have full access to all of Seafight's premium features for two weeks. The game is playable without the premium access, but much more of a hassle. However, two weeks is more than enough to give you a feel for the game. There isn't much in the way of customization at the beginning, all players start with the same newbie ship. The immediate goal is to complete all the quests found in the Pub section of the site, none of which involve combat or much input from the player. Instead, you simply type the coordinates you are given into your 'navigation' area towards the bottom left and watch your ship sail automatically. Some quests will have item requirements, so be sure to purchase everything you need at either the trader or weapon shop. After completing all available quests, players must pass a pirate exam to advance to the next level. This exam is usually timed and actually involves combat! Combat in Seafight is a simple affair. Click the monster (or player) you wish to attack, than click fire. Be sure you have enough harpoons and cannon balls, and you're golden. The graphics are very basic, which is acceptable for a browser-based game, but I found the lack of animations disappointing. The monsters should at least move around or react, but instead they sit there as still images, even as you fire round after round at them. However, the main draw in Seafight is not the graphics or animations, but the end game PvP. Later maps have open PvP and can be conquered by player-run guilds. This leads to some intense battles with dozens or even hundreds of players on each side. If you're looking for a PvP-oriented game without a lot of grind and with low system requirements, be sure to give Seafight a try.
