Tycoon Online
”Tycoon Online” is a browser-based simulation MMO. The game plays similar to the “Sim City” franchise, but with an emphasis on building a business instead of a city.
If you love economics and building a city using smarts and resources instead of swords and magic, this is the MMO for you.

So tell me, have you ever had the burning desire to play a game that put you in the shoes of a business tycoon? To play a game that required the number-crunching abilities of an accountant, and the business dedication of the great Donald Trump himself? A game that not only allowed you to create your own company, but to hire employees and set them to work too? No? Oh, that’s ok; neither have I.
However, if you have wanted to take part in such exhilarating events as those described above; “Tycoon Online” would be the place to do it. It begins with the naming of your very own secretary, who (like a real secretary, no doubt) will barrage you daily with emails outlining the many things you’ve yet to do, and she’ll send them directly to your personal email address, if you so choose. After naming your secretary you’ll be sent a few beginning instructions that should send you well on your way to becoming the best in the biz’; if you can make any sense of it, that is.
I sure as hell couldn’t. However, the on-screen instructions helped me greatly in the beginning hours of my quest to becoming a virtual millionaire, and before long I was setting journalists to work at lumber mills, and electricians to work in the pig farms, watching with steepled fingers and a newly acquired evil laugh as the dollars grew an grew.
You see, making money in “Tycoon Online” is really quite simple, once you get the hang of it. You make a company and give it a catchy name, and then you build a factory and specify its intentions (milling, pig farming, etc). Then you’ll need to buy up a few squares of land, and put your factory in. Hire some workers, watch the money grow, rinse, and repeat. I’m sure in the end there are a great many additional elements involved in the making of the bigger companies, and subsequently, the owning of a city; however I never really made it that far, as I just couldn’t make myself keep playing. If you do, be sure to drop me a line.
“Tycoon Online” really is a game with a specific audience in mind. I’m not one hundred percent sure who that might be just yet, but they’re probably out there somewhere, and they probably love playing the game as much as they do the real version in life. It’s not a visually appealing game by any stretch of the imagination, as aside from the occasional picture or java based land-planner it is made up entirely of text, and played entirely through a web browser.
For those interested in additional advancement, there’s the option of ‘going gold’ which will set you back about USD $20 a year. Doing so provides access to a range of additional benefits, such as the ability to choose or design a company logo, access to a briefcase that allows you to store text files online, and the option to design your own avatar, among other things. It even allows you to skip ahead of the loading queue—a system that I found quite hilarious. You see, occasionally when you try to open a page, you’re told that the server is busy and that you must wait 30 seconds. Refresh the page and another 30 seconds is added to the timer, informing you that patience is rewarded. Just a little niggle that I found interesting, really, but yeah—become a Gold Member and avoid it all together.
“Tycoon Online” isn’t a game for everyone. Hell, at this point I’d be willing to say that it isn’t a game for most, but I know how you all feel about that. If you enjoy business or took a special liking to economic courses in school, I’m sure you’ll love it.

I like the game and didn't have a hard time with it. Yes, the game isn't for everyone as the reviewer points out. If you like SimCity, Rollercoaster Tycoon, or other similar games, you'll like Tycoon Online. It's fun because you compete with players all over the world but there's no attacking like in most sims out there. There's a good community and the game is always getting improved. The game is based on a 70 day round and resets after each round. There's no number crunching in order to play - I suppose if you're into that type of thing you can do it on your own. There's an extensive wiki & help files as well as a forum if you have questions - the game has been around for a long time (for a browser game), like 6 or 7 years. There is a server delay screen that pops up a few times each hour while the game is calculating updates (the game is based on 10 minute ticks). Getting a Gold Membership removes that and gives a lot of other perks. I've stayed with the game over the years, always coming back despite playing many other games. I give it 4.5 stars.
