Buying cards will give you more options sooner, though, as the in-game prices for some of the more worthwhile characters can take quite a bit of saving. But, unlike a large majority of games, you can get all the content through playing and dedication; money helps, but it offers nothing additional in terms of exclusive content.

In case you still haven't quite figured it out, the game revolves around card battles. Each player is required to construct a deck with a minimum eight cards; once a challenge is instigated, four random cards will be taken from each player's library, and be pitted against one another. All cards sport both a power, and a damage number. Power determines which card will beat which; for example, if you use a card with 5 power and your opponent uses a card with 2, there's a very good chance you're going to wipe the floor with him. Damage determines how much you hurt the opposing player when your card wins its duel; each player starts with 12 hit points, and the one with the lowest after all four cards are used is the loser.

While the game is simple, it's not that simple. On top of damage and power, cards also can obtain abilities, such as increasing their own power, decreasing the opponent's, or even copying the attributes of the card they're facing. Bonuses can also be unlocked when at least two cards from the same clan are present. To add a cherry on top, each match also begins with 12 pillz, which you can use to boost your card's power or damage. So yes, the game is easy to learn and simple to understand; but no, it's not so simple that a good strategy is meaningless. Against good opponents, "Urban Rivals" is just as mind wracking as a game of chess.

Perhaps the easiest way to explain how much I love this game is to put it in perspective. This week, I have received advanced copies of three AAA console games, 2 blockbuster movie screeners, and a book I've been waiting for since last June to review. Have I even opened the envelopes they were mailed in? No, because I've been far too busy playing "Urban Rivals," and enjoying every minute of it. If you're a fan of trading card games, looking for a free game that truly is equally offered to paying and non-paying clients, or in the market for a new, addictive experience, there is absolutely no reason not to give this a whirl.
