After two years of development, the latest version of the mafia browser MMO "Omerta" -- "Omerta 3" -- has been given a release date of July 8. (That's next Wednesday, for those too lazy to look at a calendar.)

Adding several features and tweaking the general "Omerta" gameplay, "Omerta 3" will alter quite a bit -- especially when it comes to attacking (and defending yourself from) other players.

"The brutal reality of a kill in 'Omerta' can be hard to take when you have worked hard ranking your account then wake up to find it dead," said Otto Adang, "Omerta 3's" project manager. "This is why we made a number of changes to make things fairer and give a fighting chance to survive. Maybe even get back and punish your attackers."

Otto gave an example of a particularly entertaining scenario they saw during the mafia MMO's beta testing.

"We witnessed a situation during our beta testing where many players were chasing one guy around, who just kept surviving by the skin of his teeth and employed every trick in the book to stay alive. He traveled from city to city, kept healing himself, hid away in the safe house and sneakily switched between being online and offline. He died eventually but the whole process took several hours. Now, just image what happens when hundreds of players are trying to do this to each other and bullets fly in both directions. I can't wait to see it."

Until the new version of the popular mafia MMO launches on July 8, players can pre-register for the game at http://www.omerta3.com. Doing so will get you "bonus items" when the new version of the MMO launches, so if you anticipate even trying it out, it's probably best to get an account set up now.
